Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik likens Gauri Lankesh to a dog

New Delhi, Jun 18: A fringe right-wing outfit's chief yesterday likened slain Bengaluru journalist Gauri Lankesh to a dog.

Pramod Muthalik, chief of the right-wing outfit Sri Ram Sene, made this comparison while hitting out at critics who have been asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on Lankesh, who was murdered last September.

"Many wanted PM Modi to react after Gauri Lankesh's death. Why should Modi react if some dog dies in Karnataka?" said Muthalik to raucous cheers of "Jai Shri Ram" from the audience he was addressing, a video showed.

Muthalik later defended his statement, saying he didn't directly compare Lankesh to a dog, and that he was merely pointing out that PM Modi cannot comment on every death in Karnataka.

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari slammed Muthalik for his comments on Lankesh.

"Disgusting, nauseating, revolting...vigilante group Sri Ram Sene's Head Pramod Muthalik compares assassinated journalist Gauri Lankesh to a dog. Mr Prime Minister @narendramodi you did not condemn Gauri Lankesh's murder are you now going to condone this too," tweeted Tewari.

Just two days ago, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Lankesh murder case summoned a man called Rakesh Math, the Vijayapura district president of the Sri Ram Sene, for questioning, news agency reported. The decision to question Math was taken by the SIT as the suspected shooter, Parashuram Waghmare, was an active member of the Hindutva organisation that has courted controversy in the past in Karnataka with its "moral policing" activities.

An undated photograph of Muthalik and Waghmare has recently surfaced raising questions of links between the Ram Sene and those involved in the murder of Lankesh.

A senior SIT official said that Waghmare had confessed that he killed the journalist-activist to "save his religion". He was arrested from north Karnataka's Vijayapura district a few days ago.

Lankesh was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants outside her residence in Bengaluru in September 5, 2017.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.

Mangaluru, May 9: A team of doctors at Mangaluru's Mangala Hospital has developed a 'bubble helmet' that will provide an alternative to patients who need an oxygen mask.

The team was led by Dr Ganapathi, medical director of Mangala Hospital and Mangala Kidney Foundation in the city.

The bubble helmet, which has a special collar attached to it, helps the patients with breathing issues, and to avoid using ventilator facility.

Dr Ganapathi said, "When a patient needs intubation we will be providing them oxygen bubble helmets and we will first give it a trial before we intubate a patient."

"I have converted an ordinary snorkelling mask into a ventilator assist device, this mask can be used as a personal protection device by connecting it to a bacterial viral filter," he added.

Dr Ganapathi said that the connector has been made available in India and a snorkelling mask can be easily converted into a ventilator assist device. And it will make the management of coronavirus patients easy.
