]Mangalore, July 20: Unbroken cloud on the sky did not delay Ramadan 1433 in the Islamic calendar for the Muslims living across twin districts of Coastal Karnataka and Kerala as dozens of eagle-eyed Muslims spotted the crescent moon on Friday evening near Kasaragod.

Ramadan in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi began a day after Muslims began fasting in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar.

The Thakbeer was pronounced from the minarets of the mosques across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi after Maghrib Namaz, as all religious scholars and Qazis of the region declared that Saturday will be the start of the blessed month.

People were seen greeting each other on the beginning of the holy month. Devout Muslims rushed to Masjids in large numbers for their first Taraveeh. Women at houses were seen doing last minute preparation for the first Ramadan 'shari' or the meals taken before dawn.

Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Ahmed Musliar and Udupi Qazi PM Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, conveying Ramadan greetings to the people twin districts, urged the Muslims to busy themselves with prayers, fasting and spiritual introspection throughout the month.

Moon sightings are reported from various areas including Kasaragod and Kappad of nearby state of Kerala including.

However, in Bhatakal there was no sign of beginning of Ramadan till night. One of the aides of Bhatkal Qazi Maulana Muhammad Iqbal Mulla Nadvi has said that none of the Muslims sighted the moon in the area and moreover they have just completed 29 days of the month of Shaban. “Hence Ramadan in Bhatkal may begin on Sunday,” he said.

Ramadan begins around 11 days earlier each year. Its start is calculated based on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the Muslim lunar month that varies between 29 or 30 days.

During the month, Muslims are expected to abstain during daylight hours from food, drink, smoking and sex to focus on spirituality.
