Mangaluru, Mar 6: Six persons including former minister B Ramanath Rai have been booked by Bantwal Town Police following directions from a local magistrate court in connection with seizure of Rs 62 lakh during the Assembly elections last year.

The other accused are Uday Hegde, proprietor of Nirman Constructions, Sudhakar Shetty, proprietor of Mugarodi Constructions, Varun and Preetam Devadiga, employees of Mugarodi Constructions, and Mr Rai’s personal assistant Densil Herman.

According to a complaint filed by Bantwal Tahsildar Sannalingaiah on March 3, 2019, Income Tax sleuths raided the office of Sudhakar Shetty of Mugarodi Constructions in 2018 and seized Rs. 22 lakh in cash on May 8, 2018.

The sleuths then raided Srinivas Lodge at BC Road and seized Rs. 40 lakh in cash from Densil Herman. The sleuths accused them of violating the model code of conduct and using the money for distribution among voters.

Following a report from Income Tax sleuths seeking legal action, Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer S. Sasikanth Senthil directed the Tahsildar to file a complaint with the Bantwal Town Police.

The police registered a non-cognisable case and submitted it to the Additional Civil Judge and JMFC court for directions.

Based on the order of the court, the Bantwal Town Police on Tuesday registered a case against Mr. Rai and the five under Section 171 (E) of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 123 of the Representation of Peoples Act 1951.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesday demanded that Bengaluru should be put under lockdown for 20 days to contain the spread of coronavirus, the cases of which have risen sharply recently.

“Stop playing with people's lives. There’s no use in sealing off only some areas. If the people of Bengaluru must live, then a lockdown of at least 20 days is needed. Otherwise, Bengaluru will become another Brazil,” Kumaraswamy said in a tweet. “People’s health is more important, not economy.”

The JD(S) leader was reacting to the BJP government's decision to impose an area-wide lockdown in Chickpet, KR Market, Kalasipalyam and Chamarajpet while streets will be sealed off in VV Puram, Siddapura, Yelahanka, Vidyaranyapura and Chickpet.

Bengaluru has witnessed a huge spike in its Covid-19 tally; the city currently has at least 919 active cases. This has sparked off fears that the contagion might have reached the community.

Kumaraswamy has also demanded welfare measures for the poor. “The poor and the labourers should be given ration immediately. The state’s 50 lakh working class should get ₹5,000 each. The aid already announced by the government hasn’t reached drivers, weavers, Madiwalas and other communities,” he said, adding that mere announcements of a package won’t be enough and “it has to be implemented.”
