Mangaluru, Jun 28: Expelled Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal has accused Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai of abusing Congress veteran B Janardhana Poojary in public and igniting communal clashes in Bantwal for political gains.

Speaking to media persons in the city on Wednesday, Mr Bantwal, “revealed” that Mr Rai had used Tulu Nadu’s extreme derogatory words like “‘ra***maga’ and ‘nayisoo***maga’” against Mr Poojary in a fully crowded wedding hall nearly five months ago.

“MR Rai had attended a certain Rajesh’s wedding in Surathkal Buntara Bhavana on February 6, 2017. Local Congress leaders Arun Coelho and Tejaswi Raj too were present there. Mr Rai asked them where Mr Poojary was using the above mentioned words and further abused him in Tulu,” he said.

Interestingly, Mr Bantwal revealed the five month old incident for the first time a day after Harish Kumar, a leader of Billava community was made the president of Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee. The appointment was seen as an apparent attempt by the Congress to woo Billavas in the coastal district in the wake of community stalwart Janardhana Poojary’s dissidence with the party leaders.

Lashing out at the Bunt stalwart, Mr Bantwal said that Mr Rai owes his political position today to Mr Poojary. “Back in 1985, when Mr Rai was nobody in the party, he secured the ticket to contest from Bantwal constituency because of Mr Poojary,” he said.

“Billawas and Bunts are the majority and strengths of this region. They cannot be without each other. We do not believe in seeing them as different communities. But some people always get caste into politics”, he said.

He also said that national leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, A K Anthony always praised Mr Poojary and called him an honest politician, but Rai never valued him.

Justifying Mr Poojary’s recent outburst against his own party men in the state, Mr Bantwal said: “This is a democracy. People are allowed to criticize others.”

“Though Mr Poojary often criticized the chief minister, the former never used any unconstitutional or derogatory words against anyone”, he added. Calling Mr Rai an unfaithful and ungrateful, he said that Dakshina Kannada doesn’t need a politician like Mr Rai.

Mr Bantwal went on to say that being a follower of Sri Narayana Guru, he believed in being true to his religion, but also being an Indian first. “Nobody likes to fight. Some greedy politicians like Mr Rai create communal clashes for vote bank. Transferring police officers won’t solve problems in Bantwal. It is Mr Rai who needs to be stripped off his power to restore peace here”, he said.

Mr Bantwal also accused Mr Rai of always being on the side of ‘note and vote’. He called him a ‘modern day Shishupala’ and said that ‘Krishna’ had waited long enough and cannot hold it in anymore, it is time to show Mr Rai’s true colors to the people who voted him to power.

Bengaluru, May 1: The Karnataka government on Friday issued a show cause notice to an IAS officer over his recent tweet about coronavirus-cured Tablighi Jamaat members donating plasma for treatment of other patients.

The officer, Mohammad Mohsin, was in the news last year after the Election Commission suspended him for trying to inspect Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter during his visit to Odisha in April. He was deployed as a poll observer.

"More than 300 Tablighi Heroes are donating their plasma to serve the country in New Delhi only. What about? #Godi Media? They will not show the works of humanity done by these heroes," Mohsin said in a tweet on April 27.

A 1996 batch IAS officer from Karnataka cadre hailing from Bihar, Mohsin is currently serving as a secretary in the Backward Class Welfare Department.

The state government said the show cause notice has been issued to the officer in connection with his tweet.

"The adverse coverage this tweet has got in the media has been taken note of seriously by the government, given the serious nature of COVID-19 and the sensitivities involved," the notice, which was accessed by PTI, stated.

The government has sought a written explanation from the officer within five days for violating the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.

It warned of action against Mohsin as per the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969 if he fails to submit his reply before the deadline.

"The Karnataka government has made it clear that it would not hesitate to act even against powerful functionaries if their actions are damaging to the harmony in the state at a time when all are united in fighting COVID-19," a senior state bureaucrat said.

The Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic missionary group, shot into the limelight early this year after thousands of its members who attended a congregation in south Delhi's Nizamuddin in March tested positive for coronavirus.

After attending the event, the group's members travelled to various parts of the country, with many of them carrying the virus.

Udupi, Feb 16: Nine people were killed after a private bus collided with a large roadside boulder in Udupi district in Karnataka on Saturday, the police said. The accident took place on Saturday evening, at around 5.45 pm, on the Mulnur Ghat at Abbas Kattingeri in Mala village, while the bus was on its way to Mangaluru from Sringeri, reported the news channel.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying around 35 passengers, was trying to manoeuvre a turn while travelling on a ghat road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit a massive boulder and the impact caused seven people to die on the spot. Two others passed away while they were on the way to the hospital.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Radha Ravi, Yogendra, Preetham Gowda, Basavaraju, Angana, Sharul and Ranjitha. The cleaner of the bus was also killed in the accident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were mostly in their early 20s and were employees of Vital Records Private Limited near JCK Industrial Park. Century Vital Records is a data security company which works in the Hebbal Industrial Mysuru. The group was visiting Udupi, Hornadu and Kudremukh.

While some of the injured persons were rushed to Manipal hospital, others were taken to the Karkala city government hospital, police said.

The police have said that rash and negligent driving by the driver is likely to have caused the accident. A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station, the police said.

Last month, three persons were killed and four others were injured after a fatal collision between a van and a bus near Bengaluru. Both the vehicles caught fire after the impact, but while passengers of the bus, travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga, managed to escape, the three passengers who were trapped in the van could not escape and were charred to death.
