Mangaluru, Aug 25: In spite of the massive hate-campaign against actor-turned-politician Ramya by saffron forces, thousands of her fans thronged Kadri grounds in the city where she was the chief guest for a musical event organized by the Kadri Cricketers' Club as part of Krishna Janmashtami celebrations on Thursday night.

Addressing the gathering, the former Mandya MP thanked the people of Manglauru for their love and hospitality and described them as “very sweet people”.

Ms Ramya, who was wearing Mangaluru jasmine, impressed the crowed by uttering a few words in Tulu, the local language of this port city. She went on to claim that people of Mangaluru treated her like their own daughter.

Meanwhile, a few miscreants owning allegiance to saffron groups hurled eggs, stones and footwear at the stage where Ramya was sitting. However, police managed to bring the situation under control and reportedly detained a couple of miscreants.

Forest minister B Ramanath Ra, food minister U T Khader, MLC Ivan D'Souza among others attend the event. However, Ms Ramya was not allowed to take part in Mosaru Kudike due to security reasons, it is learnt.

Prior to this a small group of protesters belonging to Sangh Parivar attempted to block Ramya's convoy at the exit road of the Mangaluru International Airport. They also hurled eggs at the convoy when she was coming out of the Airport.

Meanwhile, speaking to media persons Ms Ramya rubbished the allegations that she compared Mangaluru to hell. She said that media is quoting her out of context.

In the interview, she had said that if a region can be called hell' just because bad things such as murder happen there you can find hell in Mangaluru too where many murders took place. She also recalled the murder of Praveen Poojary, a BJP worker who was targeted by Hindu vigilantes for being involved in transporting cattle.

She was arguing that a place or country should not be called as hell' just because of the presence of some anti-social elements there. “I haven't seen hell,” she said.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: The coronavirus-driven lockdown will continue for another 15 days, but relaxations will be allowed in a graded manner, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said after a four-hour-long video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

“Agriculture and industrial sectors will be given relaxation. Government offices will be allowed to work with partial strength. But the PM said detailed guidelines will be issued in two days,” Yediyurappa said, briefing reporters.

“Importantly, the lockdown for the next two weeks will be different than how it was in the past three weeks. The Centre, keeping in mind economic activities, especially agriculture, industry and employment of labourers, the Centre will tell us what needs to be done,” the CM said.

According to Yediyurappa, PM Modi told all chief ministers that the next 2-3 weeks will be critical. “The next few weeks will decide whether or not we have succeeded. If the situation worsens, we have to face the crisis,” Yediyurappa said, quoting Modi.

Apparently, Modi sought details on the COVID-19 situation from 12-13 states where the situation is grave. “He did not take a report from Karnataka,” Yediyurappa said. “This morning, seven new cases were reported in the state, taking our tally to 214. Nationally, we were in the third place; we’re now 11th,” he said, hailing the efforts of officials involved in fighting the pandemic.

The CM said it was “inevitable” to continue the lockdown for another 15 days. “But for citizens to get essential supplies, there’s no bar on them going by walk alone. Also, we will see to it that agricultural activities are not affected anywhere,” Yediyurappa said.

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar has urged his party colleagues to be active on social media to counter the propaganda of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media persons, the KPCC president said that no more than 20 out of the 68 Congress MLAs are active on social media.

“All those MLAs who are doing well need to be projected. We want leaders, not mere followers. They all should be the face of Congress in Karnataka. Party should not depend on just my face or Siddaramaiah’s,” he said.

Shivakumar’s diktat has resulted in the party’s social media unit scrambling to get leaders to create their accounts.

“We’re pressuring all the party MLAs and leaders. We’re asking their personal assistants or gunmen to operate their accounts if they are not savvy with social media,” KPCC social media chief A N Nataraj Gowda said.

He pointed out that the 20 MLAs who are active on social media include U T Khader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Priyank Kharge, Krishna Byre Gowda among others.

“We’re also trying to get the accounts verified of those who are beginning to get active. For example, it was only recently that we got the accounts of S R Patil and Vijay Singh verified,” Gowda said.

Tapping the full potential of social media is crucial for the Congress because the BJP has found much success in reaching out to voters through various online platforms.

In fact, ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress found that there were 10 ministers and some 40 MLAs who had turned a blind eye towards social media.

Shivakumar said he was also working on putting in place a system in the party under which all developments related to the state and country will be communicated to all party leaders at 10 am every day.
