Ramya denies taking class on fake accounts

Bengaluru, Feb 9: AICC social media and digital communications head Ramya on Thursday claimed that she did not train party workers on creating fake social media accounts, contrary to a video clip that went viral earlier this week.

"The video has been edited to suggest that I was teaching a lesson on creating fake accounts," Ramya told reporters. "I never said that fake accounts should be created."

In the 1.34-minute-long video clip, Ramya was seen and heard asking Youth Congress members to create multiple accounts. Ramya said she was only explaining the difference between bots, fake accounts and multiple accounts. "I told them that they should have separate accounts - one personal and another party-related."

While clarifying, she cited the example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he had three accounts in his name. When asked to comment on the BJP filing a police complaint against her, Ramya said: "So what?"

Ramya said her controversial TOP-POT tweet had garnered unnecessary attention. "There's no need to attach special meaning to it. Like Modi said, I was just referring to potato, onion and tomato (POT)," she said. Ramya's tweet wondering whether Modi was high on pot (marijuana) drew sharp reactions from across party lines.

Ramya reviewed the party's social media operations and held discussions with social media coordinators from 125 Assembly constituencies at the Congress' headquarters here on Thursday.

I do not know why media is making some big issues. Most of us have many FB accounts, Email Ids. This is not like Aadhar or Passport where it is the identity. Even in US, I know many senators having many FB accounts. They cannot share their personal details on FB so they have personal, political and regular friends.

Bengaluru, Jan 19: The Karnataka government has given its nod to teach 'Vivekadeepini' slokhas, authored by Adi Shankaracharya, in schools across the state, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said on Saturday.

At an event called 'Vivekadeepini Mahasamarpane,' organised by Vedanta Bharati, Yediyurappa said, "It has been noticed that Vivekadeepini, which evolves the mind and illumines a person, has a great effect on students.

Parents and teachers have found a positive change among children who were inspired by Vivekadeepini." "Hence, the government has given its nod to allow teaching Vivekadeepini in the schools in Karnataka," he added.

According to the organisers of the event, around two lakh children from 50 schools participated in the event where they were taught to chant Vivekadeepini, comprising verses for the seekers in the spiritual journey.

Yediyurappa reminded the audience that the Indian culture and civilisation is the oldest and the best, which they should feel proud of. Likening Amit Shah to the first union home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he said, "After Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel if we have seen a union home minister, it is Amit Shah, who has successfully resolved many burning issues of the countries within a few months.

"Shah succeeded in finding a permanent solution to Kashmir issue," Yediyurappa said.

May 28: The Karnataka State Election Commission on Thursday announced postponement of gram panchayat polls citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Out of 6,025 gram panchayats, the tenure of 5,800 gram panchayats will end by June-August 2020.

"After examining the feasibility of conducting general elections to gram panchayats, the State Election Commission, considering the current situation as exceptional circumstance, has decided to temporarily postpone the general elections to the gram panchayats," the SEC said in a release.

It said after examining the situation in the days to come, the decision will be taken on holding the general elections to the gram panchayats.

The CEC also states that report by Deputy Commissioners of districts on holding the elections was verified and it has been found that district administrations are involved in COVID-19 related work and there will be shortage of staff and transport facilities for the elections. Besides, there would be a problem in maintaining law and order.

Last week through a letter to Deputy Commissioners of districts, the commission had sought opinion on holding panchayat polls amid the COVID-19 crisis. It had also pointed out that electoral roll needs to be prepared and reservations had to be allocated as per the new amendments.

Stating that the state election commission's decision to postpone gram panchayat elections was against the provisions of the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act 1993, the Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah said the Congress will question this "undemocratic act" in the court of law.

He accused the commission of playing to the BJP's tune and said the congress will protest the decision at gram panchayat level.

Opposition parties in the state, especially congress, have been demanding elections.

The government was in favour of postponement of polls and wants to have administrative committees to govern the panchayats, until the polls are held, according to government sources.

The Congress, raising apprehension about administrative committees, has accused the government of conspiring to have ruling BJP workers as its members.

A congress delegation had last week submitted a petition to State Election Commissioner B Basavaraju and urged the Commission to hold elections.

The congress had even suggested continuation of sitting panchayat members until the polls are held, instead of appointing administrative committees.
