Bengaluru, Jun 1: Former actress and Congress spokesperson Ramya aka Divya Spandana while congratulating BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman for becoming only the second woman in India's political history to be appointed as the Union Finance Minister, indirectly took a dig at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government for the slump in the country's economic growth.

"Congratulations @nsitharaman on taking charge of a portfolio that was only last held by another woman, Indira Gandhiji in 1970 -- makes us womenfolk proud! The GDP not looking great, I'm sure you will do your best to revive the economy. You have our support. Best wishes," her tweet read.

Data released by the government showed that India's growth had fallen to 5.8% in the January-March period, putting it behind China -- which logged 6.4% -- for the first time in one-and-a-half years. This also meant that the economy logged an average growth of 6.8% for the 2018-19 financial year, lower than the earlier estimate of 7%.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who was the Union Defence Minister in the NDA government's first stint, was appointed as the Finance Minister earlier in the day. "Honoured and humbled by the opportunity given to serve the nation under your leadership. As a karyakarta, grateful to my party BJP," she tweeted soon afterwards, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Arun Jaitley, the previous Finance Minister, had opted out of the government on health grounds. Nirmala Sitharaman's main responsibilities would be to arrest the country's flagging economy, besides finding the money to fund PM Modi's campaign promises without undermining the budget deficit target of 3.4% of the Gross Domestic Product for the year through March 2020. Having worked as a research manager for audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in London, her appointment has been generally favoured by industry leaders.

Indira Gandhi had held the finance ministry as an additional portfolio while fulfilling her main responsibilities as the country's Prime Minister in the 1970s.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who is represented in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, was given the important portfolio after the National Democratic Alliance won 352 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections -- restricting the opposition alliance to 91. The BJP scored 303 seats on its own.

Dammam, May 29: A woman hailing from Mangaluru, who was waiting for repatriation amidst coronavirus lockdown in Saudi Arabia, passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

The deceased has been identified as Lateefa (55), wife of Abdul Azeez, a resident of Angaragundi near Baikampady on the outskirts of the city.

She had flown to Saudi Arabia in November 2019 along with her husband to spend some time with their NRI son in Dammam. They were supposed to return in April this year.

After the sudden cancellation of regular flights due to lockdown, they were waiting for the repatriation flights from Dammam to Mangaluru or Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Lateefa’s health condition worsened and she was hospitalised. She passed away on Thursday without responding to any treatment. Last rites are expected to take place in Dammam.

Bengaluru, July 13: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday made it clear that the government had no plans to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts beyond July 22.  The two districts will enter a lockdown starting 8 pm on July 14.

“There is no proposal before the government to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts. The chief minister requests citizens not to panic and cooperate with the government without paying heed to rumours,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.

“The lockdown is being imposed to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases in these districts. The CM has instructed officials to make all arrangements in a week’s time and make ready whatever is necessary,” the CMO said.

The clarification came after Yediyurappa chaired a meeting of the Covid-19 task force meeting. Yediyurappa also held a video conference with officials from all districts to review the Covid-19 situation, rainfall and irrigation measures.

Two more districts - Dakshina Kannada and Dharwad - have decided to impose a lockdown to control the spread of Covid-19 following Yediyurappa’s video conference. Starting July 15, Dakshina Kannada will be under a lockdown for a week whereas it will be a 9-day lockdown in Dharwad.

During his video conference, Yediyurappa noted that the number of cases was on the rise in Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Ballari, Udupi and Kalaburagi.

He further noted that Covid-19 fatalities were going up in Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag and Mysuru. He asked authorities to bring this under control. “Bidar is among five districts nationally when it comes to deaths. This has to be controlled,” Yediyurappa said, seeking a report by experts on this.

Yediyurappa told authorities to prioritize rapid antigen tests. “One lakh test kits have been procured. Use them wisely in emergency cases,” the CM said. He ordered that those aged above 60 years, those with serious illnesses and showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) have to be identified and subjected to Covid-19 tests.
