Shivamogga, Aug 17: Hartal Halappa, former Food and Civil Supplies Minister of Karnataka and BJP leader, has been exonerated of rape charges by the Shivamogga court.

Halappa was accused of allegedly raping the wife of his financier-friend friend when he stayed in their residence on November 29, 2009. Then chief minister BS Yeddyurappa led BJP government was in severe embarrassment when a Kannada daily broke the story.

An elated Halappa on Thursday termed the judgment as the victory of truth. Speaking to the media persons at the court hall after the verdict came, Halappa stated that the rape allegation was a political conspiracy against him.

“I had been stating that this was a false case against me and I will fight that. Although, it took me over seven years to fight the case, in the end the truth won," said Halappa.

Halappa further said that he was a great believer in justice and today's verdict reaffirmed him. When media persons questioned him about when he would expose the political conspiracy against him, he said "Let the verdict which came after seven years sink in. I will decide later."

He said that he was visiting the famous Sigandureshwari temple from the court. "I had taken a vow at the Sigandureshwari temple that I had done nothing wrong and the Goddess had listened to me. I will offer a special puja at the temple and from there I plan to visit Dharmasthala too," Halappa said.

It could be recalled here that even before a formal complaint was lodged against him, Halappa had quit the ministry reportedly to save the Yeddyurappa-led government from the embarrassment. The victim has been identified as Chandramathi. Her husband Venkatesh Murthy had later lodged a complaint against the minister seeking punishment for Halappa.

Halappa, considered a close lieutenant of Yeddyurappa, was a three-time MLA from the Sorab constituency in Shivamogga district. Shivamogga is the home district of BJP stalwarts both Yeddyurappa and KS Eshwarappa. With Assembly elections scheduled for next year, Halappa wanted to come clean on the charges made on him.

Kalaburagi, Mar 25: Three coronavirus suspect persons who did not stay home during their mandatory 14-day quarantine period had first information report (FIRs) booked against them in police stations in Kalaburagi town in Karnataka.

The district administration took this action after it came to know that the three pesons were mingling in the public despite being told to stay home to avoid passing on the coronavirus.

Cases have been booked against them under IPC sections 188 and 271, deputy commissioner B Sharath said.

Stringent action would be taken against them, he said, for not only threatening the health of their family members but society at large.

“The administration will stop at nothing to safeguard public health in this time of emergency,” Sharath said.

People moving around on motorbikes without a proper reason will have their bikes seized. Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC will remain in force until further orders, he said.

Udupi, Feb 16: Nine people were killed after a private bus collided with a large roadside boulder in Udupi district in Karnataka on Saturday, the police said. The accident took place on Saturday evening, at around 5.45 pm, on the Mulnur Ghat at Abbas Kattingeri in Mala village, while the bus was on its way to Mangaluru from Sringeri, reported the news channel.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying around 35 passengers, was trying to manoeuvre a turn while travelling on a ghat road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit a massive boulder and the impact caused seven people to die on the spot. Two others passed away while they were on the way to the hospital.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Radha Ravi, Yogendra, Preetham Gowda, Basavaraju, Angana, Sharul and Ranjitha. The cleaner of the bus was also killed in the accident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were mostly in their early 20s and were employees of Vital Records Private Limited near JCK Industrial Park. Century Vital Records is a data security company which works in the Hebbal Industrial Mysuru. The group was visiting Udupi, Hornadu and Kudremukh.

While some of the injured persons were rushed to Manipal hospital, others were taken to the Karkala city government hospital, police said.

The police have said that rash and negligent driving by the driver is likely to have caused the accident. A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station, the police said.

Last month, three persons were killed and four others were injured after a fatal collision between a van and a bus near Bengaluru. Both the vehicles caught fire after the impact, but while passengers of the bus, travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga, managed to escape, the three passengers who were trapped in the van could not escape and were charred to death.
