Bidar, Jan 30: Violent protests erupted across Bidar on Tuesday as saffron outfits imposed a bandh following the rape and murder of a 20-year-old college student by a miscreant.
The Hindu Hitharakshana Vedike had called for a Bidar Bandh. All shops remained closed since morning. The Bharatiya Janata Party and various self-proclaimed Hindutva groups such as VHP, Bajrang Dal, Sri Rama Sena, ABPV had arranged protests across the city as part of Bandh. The district unit of Savita Samaja also joined the protest.
Police resorted to lathi charge to restore order when protesters turned violent and began to throw stones at stones at shops and buildings belonging to Muslims.
BJP leader and Bidar MP Bhagavant Khuba was mildly injured in the lathi charge. Over 25 others were also hurt. Police vehicles were damaged. Currently order has been restored.
Khuba demanded a judicial inquiry into the lathi charge and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner. "We had not given permission for the procession to enter old Bidar city. However, the protesters resorted to stone throwing," said police sources.
On Sunday, 20-year-old girl Pooja was found dead in forest near Mylar village in Bidar. According to reports, a spurned lover, Shamshuddin raped the student of Bachelor of Arts, and slashed her neck with a knife after the girl turned down his expression of overtures. The Dhannur Police, who have registered a case, arrested Shamshuddin.
