Rape case filed against Tarun Tejpal, cops reach his residence

Panaji, Nov 22: Goa police team headed by theinvestigating officer Sunita Sawant will be leaving for Delhi this evening after an FIR was filed by the state against Tehelka's founder editorTarun Tejpal for allegedly raping a woman journalist in a starred hotel in Goa earlier this month.

Director general of police (DGP) Kishan Kumar said that FIR has been filed against Tejpal based on the material the police have obtained so far. The case is filed against Tejpal under sections 354, 376 and 376(2)(k) for sexual harassment and rape.

As per new amendments on rape law, section 354 refers to sexual harassment while section 376(2)(k) refers to rape by a man "being is in a position of control or dominance over a woman".

Deputy inspector general (DIG) of police OP Mishra said that the police had obtained CCTV footage of (the lobby and elevator) of the starred hotel where Tehelka's ThinkFest was held ten days ago at Bambolim, 5km from here. The police examined the footage last night. Sources in the police said that there is a prima facie case against Tejpal. Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikarhad said earlier that a prima facie case had been made out.

The Goa police team is likely to take the late evening flight for Delhi.

In a related development, the Goa state commission for women has asked the state police for a report on the development involving the high-profile journalist. Chairperson Vidhya Shet Tanawade said that the Goa police has been asked for a report so that the commission can take an appropriate action in the matter.

Meanwhile, a team of Delhi Police officials reached Tarun Tejpal's residence today evening to deliver some papers to him, Timesnow reported.

Kashmir, Jun 14: An Army personnel was killed and two others were injured as Pakistani troops opened fire and shelled areas along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

This is the third fatality in the Pakistani firing and shelling on forward posts and villages in the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri this month.

The officials said the latest firing and shelling from across the border took place in Shahpur-Kerni sector on Saturday night, drawing strong retaliation by the Indian Army.

Three Indian Army personnel were injured in the Pakistani firing and were immediately evacuated to hospital, where one of them succumbed to injuries, the officials said.

They said the casualties suffered by the Pakistani Army in the retaliatory action were not known immediately.

On June 4, havaldar P Mathiazhagan fell to Pakistani firing in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, while on June 10, Naik Gurcharan Singh lost his life in a similar incident in Rajouri sector.

New Delhi, Jul 30: India witnessed a single-day spike of 52,123 COVID-19 cases as the total cases in the country reached 15,83,792, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Thursday.

The total cases include 5,28,242 active cases and 10,20,582 cured/discharged cases, the Health Ministry added.

A total of 775 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours taking the death toll to 34,968.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state as it reported 9,211 new COVID-19 cases 298 deaths on Wednesday. The total number of cases is now at 4,00,651 including 2,39,755 recovered cases, 1,46,129 active cases and 14,463 deaths.

The total number of cases in Tamil Nadu reached 2,34,114.

Delhi reported 1,035 COVID-19 cases yesterday, taking the total number of cases in the national capital to 1,32,275.

The total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to July 29 is 1,81,90,382 including 4,46,642 samples tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

May 10: Delhi recorded five more deaths due to coronavirus, while 381 fresh cases of the virus were reported, the city government said on Sunday.

With the fresh cases, the virus tally in the national capital has climbed to 6,923.

Between midnight of May 8 and midnight of May 9, five fresh fatalities due to the virus were reported, taking the death toll to 73, the government said in its health bulletin.

While there are 4,781 active cases of the virus in the city, 2069 patients have so far recovered from COVID-19.
