Ravi Belagere-Anil Raj case: HC orders notice to assembly, speaker, state govt

Bengaluru, Nov 30: The Karnataka high court on Thursday ordered notice to legislative assembly, its speaker, state government and three complainants in response to the petition filed by journalists Ravi Belagere and Anil Raj.

'Hi Bangalore' editor Ravi Belagere and 'Yelahanka Voice' editor Anil Raj had moved the court challenging their conviction and punishment of imprisonment for a year ordered by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. They were held guilty of breach of privilege over alleged defamatory articles about the legislators.

Justice A S Boppanna said that this matters needs detailed consideration. He said that the all parties should be magnanimous in this matter until this case is before the court.

Adjourning the hearing on Wednesday, Justice A S Bopanna observed that everybody's privilege be protected. This was when counsel for petitioners prayed the court for granting interim order saying that the duo may be arrested as the assembly has reaffirmed the decision imposing one year rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10,000 sentence imposed on them.

Mumbai, Jul 11: Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan announced on Twitter late on Saturday that he tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection.

Taking to Twitter to announce the news, he said, "I have tested CoVID positive... " He added that family and staff had also undergone tests while Bachchan has been shifted to a hospital. 

Bachchan ended his tweet saying, "All that have been in close proximity to me in the last 10 days are requested to please get themselves tested !"

Bachchan, who was last seen in Gulabo Sitabo that released on OTT platforms, will be seen in Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Bhrahmastra.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: The Indian Coast Guard today commissioned a high-speed coast interceptor boat at New Mangalore Port here giving a fillip to the coastal security.

The water jet propelled Interceptor Boat C-448 (27.80 mts in length) has an endurance of 500 nautical miles at 20 knots.

The vessel fitted with latest state of the art navigation and communication equipment can achieve a speed of 45 knots. Thus, the vessel is designed for high speed interception, close coast patrol, low intensity maritime operations, maritime surveillance, search and rescue.

The quick reaction capability coupled with modern equipment and system ensures that the vessel responds to any maritime situation. With a crew of 12 personnel, C-448 is Commanded by Assistant Commandant Apoorva Sharma.

The Interceptor Boat will be based at Mangaluru. T. M. Vijaya Bhasker, Chief Secretary Karnataka, who commissioned the IB, said that the crew should discharge their duties faithfully and with courage. Anand Prakash Badola, Commander, Coast Guard Region ( West) and A.V. Ramana, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust, were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Apr 25: Heavy rain lashed Mangaluru and surrounding areas on Saturday, providing the people respite from the sweltering heat, which they have been experiencing for the last few weeks. 

The rain, which started around 10.30 pm on Friday, lashed heavily after 2 am. Later, there was drizzle for sometime before it stopped raining around 8 am. 

People were seen walking towards the market to purchase essential commodities holding an umbrella and wearing a raincoat.
