Shivamogga, Jun 20: By securing three more marks in the re-evaluation of answer scripts, Subhashini S., a student of Ramakrishna Vidyanikethana School in Shivamogga, has scored 625 out of 625 in the SSLC examination. With this four students in Karnataka have achieved full marks in SSLC this year.

Telugu

Barring Kannada, which was her first language, the Telugu speaking girl had scored full marks in the other five subjects when the results were announced in May. She had scored 122 out of 125 in Kannada.

However, according to Ms. Subhashini, after close examination of the photocopies of her evaluated Kannada answer scripts, her teachers suggested that she opt for re-evaluation as there were no spelling, grammatical or factual errors in her answer script.

The re-evaluation result proved her right. With the perfect score in Kannada, she has become one of the toppers in the SSLC exam in Karnataka. She scored a perfect centum in English, Hindi, Social Science, Science and Mathematics.

But what makes her achievement extraordinary is the fact that she had studied in a Telugu-medium school till Class 7 in Andhra Pradesh. Her parents — Srinivasulu Reddy and Sujata — hail from Kolar. She had moved to Shivamogga to live with her grandfather, Kannappa, to study SSLC.

She chose Kannada as the first language in high school. Shobha Ramakrishna, the secretary of the school management, said scoring 125 marks in Kannada was a great achievement for a student whose medium of instruction in primary school was Telugu. Subhashini initially struggled to write the Kannada alphabets, but picked up the language in just six months with the help of teachers and a little determination.

Sujata, her mother, said: “I am happy that my daughter has finally got justice. If she had obtained 625 marks last month, it would have been wonderful. Anyway, she has got the reward for hard work. She aspires to be a doctor.” Subhashini has enrolled at Narayana Guru College in Bengaluru for first-year PUC (Science).

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said.

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.

Bengaluru, Jan 28: Brace for hefty traffic penalties as the state government is all set to reverse a notification on revised fines which came into effect last September following pushback from road users and opposition parties.

The Karnataka government will implement traffic penalties as stipulated in the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, in a phased manner following a diktat from the Centre. The government did not specify the timeline for it.

“At a recent meeting of transport ministers from various states, the Union government explained why it wanted to implement these huge fines. We found it convincing and will implement it in its original form,” said transport minister Laxman Savadi on Monday.

Savadi said India’s image globally has taken a beating due to the high number of road deaths and the Centre wants to change it at any cost. However, he said the entire set of hefty fines would not be reintroduced all at once.

BJP govt revised rates in Sept

The BJP government last September had revised fines on compoundable offences and those which are fined on the spot by traffic cops by 50%- 80%, barring drunken driving and racing.

As per the revised rates, helmetless riding attracted a penalty of Rs 500 against Rs 1,000 notified by the Centre. Driving without a licence attracted a fine of Rs 1,000 for

two- and three-wheelers and Rs 2,000 for light motor vehicles as against the earlier Rs 5,000 for all types of vehicles.

The central government recently told states and Union Territories they should enforce fines as per the amended Act and they cannot be rolled back. The road transport and highways ministry said fines cannot be reduced below the minimum amount fixed by law, unless the President gives his assent.
