Reckless truck knows down two-wheeler; father killed, two daughters critical

Moodbidri, Feb 24: In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a 48-year-old man lost his life while his two daughters suffered critical injuries after a mini truck knocked down their two-wheeler at Kelagina Pete on the Moodbidri-Guruvayankere national highway on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Uday Kumar, a local agriculturist. His daughters Nikitha (18) and Mayuri (20), who were riding pillion are battling for life at a private hospital. They are students of a private college in Moodbidri. The family resides in Karimanilu.

The accident occurred when Kumar and his daughters were on their way to a depot to sell milk. The speeding truck transporting live chicken was in the wrong lane and first collided with a police vehicle stationed on the side of the road at Kelagina Pete. It rammed into the two-wheeler after this. 

Though the truck toppled over after the accident, the driver, Kaushik, escaped unhurt. However, Kumar, who sustained grievous injuries, died while he was being shifted to hospital. A case has been registered at Venoor police station and investigations are on.

Mangaluru, Jun 21: A total of 51 private hospitals and medical colleges empanelled under the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST) have been allowed to treat Covid-19 patients in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district. Among them 30 are in Dakshina Kannada and 21 are in Udupi. Here is the full list:

Ballari, Jan 6: Two members of a family were killed in a cylinder explosion at their home in Sanjeevarayana Kote, here on Monday morning, police said.

The deceased were identified as Parvathi and her daughter Huliyamma.

The incident took place when the two were in the kitchen. Fire tenders were rushed to the rescue.

Palakkad, Jun 1: An 11-month-old boy, whose parents are placed under COVID-19 quarantine, drowned in a bucket of water in Chalissery at Palakkad district.

The toddler Muhammed Nisan was the son of Muhammad Sadiq. The parents of the child are under home quarantine after Sadiq's brother, who is living in the same home was tested positive of COVID-19.

The child was found dead in a bucket of water kept in the bathroom on Saturday around 10 pm.

Chalissery police said that ''further actions will be taken only after the test result comes out. We have filed an unnatural death case on this.''

Since the family has been quarantined, the body of the baby has been shifted to the Thrissur Medical College for COVID-19 testing.
