Reconsider removing Tipu Sultan from textbooks: BJP MP to Karnataka govt

Mysuru, Nov 1: Former union minister and senior Karnataka BJP vice-president and Lok Sabha member V Srinivas Prasad on Friday strongly condemned the state government's proposal to remove lessons on Tipu Sultan from school textbooks.

Speaking to the media here, Mr Parsad said the state was under stress due to severe floods and the government must bring more pressure on the Centre to release more funds rather than taking up the Tipu Sultan issue.

"The BJP is already labeled as a communal party, so Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa should have taken a careful decision on Tipu issue," he further said.

Ban on Kerala fish trucks' entry into Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Trucks carrying fish loads from Kerala will not be allowed to enter Dakshina Kannada district as the authorities are not being able to control the rush in markets, state Fisheries Minister and district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary said Monday.

The deputy commissioner has been instructed to restrict the entry of fish transport vehicles from outside the district forthwith, in view of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing at the markets identified in the district, the minister told reporters here.

The coastal district has to take more precautionary measures to fight COVID-19 as the number of positive cases have risen in the last couple of days, he said.

Vatican rejects second appeal of Kerala nun against her expulsion from congregation

Kochi, Mar 2: The Vatican has rejected the second appeal by Sister Lucy Kalappura -- one of the nuns who protested against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal -- against her expulsion from Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC).

In her plea, she had demanded that her version be heard and her expulsion from FCC revoked.

She was expelled from FCC for participating in public protests demanding the arrest of Franco Mulakkal in the nun rape case.

''I got a letter from Vatican which says my appeal has been rejected. But the rest of the letter is written in the Latin language. So after I understand it, I will respond," Sister Lucy told news agency.

''The authorities are contemptuous of those who make such complaints. That is why the letter is written in Latin. Sister Lucy would continue her legal fight in the courts,'' said George Moolechalil, who has been authorised by Sister Lucy to communicate with the media on her behalf.

A petition of Sister Lucy is still pending at Mananthavady Munsif Court at Wayanad that demands that she should not be expelled from the convent where she is staying.

Udupi: Deep-sea fishing boat sinks; six fishermen rescued; loss estimated at Rs 80 lakh

Udupi, May 20: All the six fishermen were rescued from a deep-sea fishing boat, which capsized after hitting a rock near Malpe here yesterday.

The boat was owned by Reshma Kharvi. The incident occurred while the boat was returning after fishing to Malpe harbor.

The helmsman lost control over the boat after steering got damaged and hit the rock and damaged.

The crew of another boat which was near to the sinking boat immediately rushed and rescued six fishermen.

Attempts to rescue the sinking boat using the yet another boat could not materialise.

The loss is said to be about Rs 80 lakh, including Rs. 5 lakh worth items, including fish, net, and other accessories. The boat ventured from Malpe port on May 14.
