October 16, 2014

New Delhi, Oct 16: Haryana witnessed an “all-time high” voter turnout in the Assembly elections held on Wednesday as the electors made a last-hour dash to seal the fate of a total of 1,351 candidates in the fray. Voting, however, was moderate in Maharashtra, where 4,110 candidates are facing a tough contest.

Of the total 1,61,58,117 voters, 76 per cent exercised their franchise at 16,320 polling stations in 90 Assembly constituencies spread over 21 districts of Haryana. In Maharashtra, the turnout was pegged at 64 per cent. Deputy Election Commissioner Sudhir Tripathi, describing the voter turnout as “moderate” in the state, said it was 54.5 per cent till 5 pm.

Haryana had witnessed 72.65 per cent voter turnout in 1968. In the last Assembly elections, the turnout was 68 per cent. In the 16th Lok Sabha elections in May, the state witnessed 71.86 per cent voters exercising their franchise.

A total of 288 Assembly seats in Maharashtra and 90 in Haryana went to polls. The counting of votes will be held on October 19.

As the voting closed, exit polls gave the BJP an edge in both Maharashtra and Haryana where Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigned extensively. In Maharashtra, the BJP was miles ahead of its opponents, including its erstwhile ally Shiv Sena, though only one exit poll gave it an absolute majority.

Today’s Chanakya, which made accurate predictions during the Lok Sabha polls, gave the BJP 151 seats, six seats more than the majority mark of 145 seats, while Times Now-CVoter gave the party 129, ABP-Nielsen 127 and India-Today-Cicero 117-131. In Haryana too, the exit polls gave the BJP a lead with Today’s Chanakya predicting 52 seats in a house of 90, CVoter 37 and Nielsen 46. Stakes of the BJP were high in both the states.

According to the Election Commission, the polling passed off peacefully in both Maharashtra and Haryana, barring a few incidents of clashes. Maoists attacked a polling party and security forces at two different locations in Gadchiroli district. One Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was wounded in an exchange of fire with Maoists which followed a claymore mine blast at Maskipalli in Chamorshi tehsil in Gadchiroli.

“The attacks did not affect polling. The injured CRPF jawan has been sent to Nagpur for treatment,” Tripathi said.

In Haryana, poll authorities had to replace 30 electronic voting machines (EVMs), 15 EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) following some technical glitches, the EC said.

Both the states witnessed a downpour of black money during elections. Director General, Election Commission, P K Dash said more than Rs 17.92 crore in cash, highest ever, was seized during elections in Maharashtra. The authorities also seized 4.61 lakh litres liquor worth Rs 10.19 crore.

In Haryana, Rs 3.10 crore was seized in cash during polls and over 1.82 lakh litres liquor worth Rs 2.69 crore.

New Delhi, Mar 9: A war of words broke out between the BJP and the Congress on Sunday over the Yes Bank crisis with the ruling party seeking to link it with the Gandhi family, while the opposition wondered if the prime minister and finance minister were "complicit" as the bank's loan book grew manifold.

Posting on Twitter a clip of a news channel report that Rana Kapoor, the arrested Yes Bank founder, had bought a painting from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, BJP's information and technology wing in-charge Amit Malviya alleged that every financial crime in India has "deep links" with the Gandhis.

The Congress dismissed the charge "fake" and called it a "diversionary" tactic.

It said Priyanka Gandhi had sold an M F Hussain painting of her father Rajiv Gandhi to Kapoor for Rs 2 crore, and the entire amount was disclosed in her income tax return of 2010.

Malviya tweeted, "Every financial crime in India has deep link with the Gandhis. Mallya used to send flight upgrade tickets to Sonia Gandhi. Had access to MMS (Manmohan Singh) and PC (P Chidambaram). Is absconding. Rahul inaugurated Nirav Modi’s bridal jewellery collection, he defaulted. Rana bought Priyanka Vadra’s paintings."

Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asked how does an M F Hussain painting of Rajiv Gandhi sold 10 years ago by Priyanka Gandhi to Yes Bank owner Rana Kapoor and disclosed in her tax returns connect with unprecedented giving of loans of Rs 2,00,000 crore in five years of the Modi government.

"More so, when (Kapoor's) proximity to BJP leaders is well known," he said.

Rubbishing the BJP's allegation, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi at a press conference said it was a "diversionary" tactic by the government.

He noted that the bank's loan book rose from Rs 55,633 crore in March 2014, the year Narendra Modi became prime minister, to Rs 2,41,499 crore in March 2019.

"Why did the loan book rise by 100 per cent in two years after demonetisation i.e from Rs 98,210 cr in March 2016 to Rs 2,03,534 ar in March 2018? Were PM and FM sleeping, ignorant or complicit?" he asked.

The entire amount Priyanka Gandhi had received was in cheque and was fully disclosed in the income tax return, Singhvi said.

Surjewala, taking to Twitter, said instead of diverting from the real issue of people's money sinking into a bad bank, should not the government answer questions like how did loans given by Yes Bank rise from Rs 55,633 crore in March 2014 to Rs 2,41,499 crore in March 2019, an increase of almost Rs 2,00,000 crore in fiver years of the Modi government.

Why did the loans given by Yes Bank rise by a whopping 100 per cent in just two years after demonetisation, he asked.

Surjewala also questioned why did the prime minister address a conference sponsored by Yes Bank on March 6 despite the RBI moratorium.

"Why did the Haryana BJP government deposit over Rs 1,000 crore in Yes Bank a month ago, knowing that it was sinking? Is this figure Rs 3,000 cr? Did Fadnavis government in Maharashtra make similar deposits?" Surjewala asked.

"Of course, the government's media proxies won't dare to ask these questions. But the nation wants to know!" he said in a series of tweets.

Kapoor, 62, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in Mumbai after charges of alleged financial irregularities and mismanagement in the bank's operations surfaced and the RBI and Union government initiated action to control its affairs.

New Delhi, Feb 22: China is delaying grant of clearance to India's proposal to send an Indian Air Force flight to carry relief material for people affected by coronavirus in the neighbouring country and bring back Indians from its city of Wuhan, official sources said Saturday.

India was to send a C-17 military transport aircraft to Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, on February 20 but the plane could not take off as permission was not granted for the flight.

"China is deliberately delaying grant of clearance for the evacuation flight," a high-level source said.

The aircraft was to carry a large consignment of medical supplies to China and bring back more Indians from Wuhan.

Sources said the Chinese side continued to maintain that there was no delay in granting permission for the flight to go, but "inexplicably" the clearance has not been given.

In a letter to President Xi Jinping earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India's solidarity to the people and government of China in meeting the challenge of the coronavirus outbreak and offered to provide assistance to the country.

India then put together relief supplies in pursuance of Modi's commitment as a token of India's solidarity, particularly in the 70th year of the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"These supplies have been offered even as India faces tremendous shortage itself, given our ethos of helping others in their hour of need," said a source aware of the issue.

The items being supplied are gloves, surgical masks, feeding pumps and defibrillators based on the requirements as indicated by the Chinese side.

India's national carrier Air India has already evacuated around 640 Indians from Wuhan in two separate flights.

According to estimates, over 100 Indians are still living in Wuhan. A sizeable number of countries have evacuated their citizens from China and restricted movement of people and goods to and from the country in view of the massive outbreak of coronavirus there.

Indian nationals in Wuhan continue their long wait for the flight. The delay is causing them and their family members in India tremendous mental anguish, said the sources.

They said relief and evacuation flights from other countries including by France are allowed to operate by China but the permission has not come through in India's case.

"Are they not interested in Indian aid provided as our token of support? Why are they creating roadblock in evacuating our nationals from Wuhan and putting them under hardship and mental agony?" said a person aware of the issue.
