Record-breaking Binny leads India to thumping win over Bangladesh

Mirpur, Jun 18: Medium-pacer Stuart Binny bagged six wickets as India registered an unexpected 47-run victory against Bangladesh via Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-curtailed second One-day International to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, here today.

Record-breaking Binny leadsSent into bat, Indian batsmen produced a below-par performance to be bowled out for a paltry 105 runs in rain-truncated 41 overs-a-side game.

But the pace combination of Binny (6-4) and Mohit Sharma (4-22) saved India from humiliation as they bundled out Bangladesh for a record 58 runs in 17.4 overs to help the visitors defend their lowest score against the hosts.

The Binny heroics came after Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed scalped five wickets for 28 runs on his debut to bowl India out for 105 in 25.3 overs.

But if India's 105 was much less than their previous low of 191 in Port of Spain during the 2007 World Cup then Bangladesh also sank to a new low as their previous lowest against the Men in Blue was 76 in 2003 at Dhaka.

Binny, whose figures are best by any Indian bowler in ODI's bettering Anil Kumble's 6-12 against West Indies in 1993, was ably supported by medium pacer Mohit from the other end.

Mohit, who was the proud owner of the 'Purple Cap' in the recently concluded IPL for Chennai Super Kings, started the rot for Bangladesh after sending openers Tamim Iqbal for 4 and Anamul Haque for nought.

Binny soon joined forces to send innings top-scorer Mithun Ali back in the pavilion for 26 and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for 11.

The rest of the batting fell like a pack of cards as Binny and Mohit had little time to celebrate between wickets.

Earlier put into bat, the stunning Indian collapse was triggered by Taskin, who returned with figures of 5-28, making it the best debut bowling performance by a Bangladesh player.

Skipper Suresh Raina's 23-ball 27, laced with three fours, was the best that an Indian batsman could manage under overcast conditions.

Put into bat, India lost Ajinkya Rahane for nought off Mashrafe Mortaza but rain soon halted play after 5.1 overs.

The resumption of play after three hours did not help matters for the visitors as Robin Uthappa (14) top-edged a skier to give Taskin, 19, his debut wicket in overcast conditions.

The lanky pacer continued to trouble the inexperienced Indian batsmen in conditions conducive to swing bowling.

Cheteshwar Pujara (11) and Ambati Rayudu (1) were trapped LBW by Taskin.

Raina tried to counter-attack with three boundaries but an Al-Amin Hossain-Mortaza combination ran him out.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (5) was soon trapped LBW off Mortaza and Akshar Patel was cleaned up by Al-Amin as India looked straight down the barrel.

All-rounder Binny (3) was caught behind chasing a wide delivery from Taskin.

The procession back to the pavilion continued as Amit Mishra was trapped LBW and Taskin's joy knew no bounds after he picked up his fifth wicket and became the eighth bowler in the history of ODIs to bag a fifer in his maiden match.

Taskin also became the first Bangladesh bowler to bag five wickets on debut. The previous best by a Bangladeshi was achieved by Sohag Gazi and Rubel Hossain, both of whom scalped four wickets on debut.

The Men in Blue laboured hard to cross the three figure mark but the formalities were completed after Shakib Al Hasan scalped Umesh Yadav (17) to bring an end to India's misery.

In fact, had it not been for the 13-ball cameo by Yadav, India could well have folded inside the 100-run mark.

The final match of the series is slated for June 18 at the same venue.

New Delhi, Aug 2: Batting great Rahul Dravid has attributed Chennai Super Kings' consistent run in the IPL to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's instincts, game-smarts and the incredible amount of work that goes behind the scenes.

N Srinivasan, the former BCCI president and head of India Cements, which owns the CSK franchise, agreed that Dhoni is a man of instinct who doesn't believe in attending team meetings and going over data.

Both were speaking at a webinar organised by the Great Lakes Institute of Management.

"If you look at the success CSK has had, they've got really good access to data and they've got really good access to people behind the scenes and they've run cricket teams at the junior level," Dravid said at the webinar according to ESPNcricinfo.

The former India captain added, "They understand talent and they've obviously got a good scouting process in place. But, what they also have is a captain who really understands instincts.

"So, I mean, look, I know Dhoni quite well and I hope he hasn't changed, but I know Dhoni is probably not one to look at reams of data and statistics."

The Super Kings have won the lucrative tournament three times -- one less than Mumbai Indians -- and reached the knockouts in each of the 10 seasons they have been a part of.

Srinivasan also spoke about how Dhoni's instinct and judgement contributed to his team's success at a time when a lot of emphases is placed on data.

"We're awash with data just now. To give you an example, there are bowling coaches and in a T20 game, they play videos of every batsman whom they're going to come against and they see how he got out, what's his strength, what's his weakness etc.

"So, MS Dhoni doesn't attend this, he's a pure instinct man. The bowling coach, (head coach Stephen) Fleming will be there and everybody will be there, everyone is giving opinions, (but) he'll get up and go.

"In the context of instinct, he feels that okay he can assess a batsman or player on the field, that's his judgement. On the other hand, there is so much of data that is available to help a person also analyse. It's a very difficult line to draw (between data and instinct)."

Srinivasan also recalled how Dhoni once refused to take "one outstanding player" suggested by the franchise boss as that could have broken the team's cohesion.

"There was one outstanding player that we suggested to MS, he said: 'no sir, he will spoil the team'. The cohesion within the team is important and see in America, franchise-based sport has been there for such a long time," he said.

"In India, we're just starting and we're new to it. But we at India Cements have had a lot of experience running teams at junior levels."

New Delhi Jul 30: After Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal's ban was reduced to 18 months, Danish Kaneria criticised Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) policies and said that the 'zero tolerance policy' applies only to him.

"Zero Tolerance policy only apply on Danish Kaneria not on others, can anybody answer the reason why I get life ban not others, Are policy applies only on cast, colour, and powerful background. I am Hindu and proud of it that's my background and my dharma," Kaneria tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, Akmal's three-year suspension was reduced to 18 months by an independent adjudicator, former Pakistan Supreme Court judge, Faqir Mohammad Khokhar.

On April 27, the Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel, Justice (retd) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, had banned the wicketkeeper-batsman for three years after finding him guilty of breaching the PCB's Anti-Corruption Code in two separate incidents.

Akmal, on May 19, filed an appeal against the three-year ban imposed on him, seeking a reduction in the duration of the sanction. He will remain suspended effectively from February 2020 till August 2021.

The batsman said he might appeal again to get the ban "reduced further".

"I am thankful to the judge for listening to my lawyers properly. I will decide about the remaining sentence and try to get it reduced further. For now I am not satisfied and will consult my lawyers and family how to take this ahead," ESPNcricinfo had quoted Akmal as saying.

"There are many players before me who made mistakes and just look at what they got and what I got. So all I say right now is thank you very much," he had added.

On the other hand, Kaneria was found guilty of spot-fixing while playing for English club Essex and was banned from the sport.

Earlier this month, Pakistan's cricket governing body 'advised' Kaneria to approach England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) if he wants to play domestic cricket after the cricketer had appealed to the PCB, seeking permission to play domestic cricket.

Los Angeles, Jan 27: Kobe Bryant, the 18-time NBA All-Star who won five championships and became one of the greatest basketball players of his generation during a 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, died in a helicopter crash Sunday. He was 41.

Bryant died in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, California, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. A different person familiar with the case confirmed that Bryant's 13-year-old daughter Gianna also was killed.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the crash had not been released publicly. The crash happened around 10 a.m. about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said it was a Sikorsky S-76 and it was not known what caused the crash. The LA County Sheriff's Department confirmed five dead in the crash, but had not released identities.

Bryant lived south of Los Angeles in coastal Orange County for much of his adult life, and he often used helicopters to save time and avoid Southern California's notorious traffic. Even as a player, he often traveled to practices and games by helicopter, and he kept up the practice after retirement as he attended to his business ventures.

The crash occurred several miles from Mamba Sports Academy, Bryant's basketball training complex in Thousand Oaks, California. Bryant, who had four daughters with his wife, Vanessa, dedicated himself to boosting women's sports in his retirement.

Colin Storm was in his living room in Calabasas when he heard ``what sounded like a low-flying airplane or helicopter.''

“It was very foggy so we couldn't see anything,'' he said. ``But then we heard some sputtering, and then a boom.''

A short time later the fog cleared a bit and Storm could see smoke rising from the hillside in front of his home.

Bryant retired in 2016 as the third-leading scorer in NBA history, finishing two decades with the Lakers as a prolific scorer with a sublime all-around game and a relentless competitive ethic. He held that spot in the league scoring ranks until Saturday night, when the Lakers' LeBron James passed him for third place during a game in Philadelphia, Bryant's hometown.

“Continuing to move the game forward (at)KingJames,'' Bryant wrote in his last tweet. “Much respect my brother.''

Bryant had one of the greatest careers in recent NBA history and became one of the game's most popular players as the face of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers franchise. He was the league MVP in 2008 and a two-time NBA scoring champion, and he earned 12 selections to the NBA's All-Defensive teams.

He teamed with Shaquille O'Neal in a combustible partnership to lead the Lakers to NBA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He later teamed with Pau Gasol to win two more titles in 2009 and 2010.

Bryant retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final NBA game.

Bryant looms large over the current generation of NBA players. After James passed Bryant on Saturday, he remembered listening to Bryant when the superstar came to speak at a childhood basketball camp.

“I remember one thing he said: If you want to be great at it, or want to be one of the greats, you've got to put the work in,'' James said. “There's no substitution for work.''

James later teamed up with Bryant on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in Beijing.

“He had zero flaws offensively,'' James said. “Zero. You backed off of him, he could shoot the 3. You body him up a little bit, he could go around you. He could shoot from mid-range. He could post. He could make free throws. ... He was just immortal offensively because of his skill set and his work ethic.''

Bryant was a basketball superstar for his entire adult life. He entered the NBA draft straight out of high school in 1996 after a childhood spent partly in Italy, where his father, former NBA player Joe “Jellybean'' Bryant, played professionally.

The Lakers acquired the 17-year-old Bryant in a trade shortly after Charlotte drafted him, and he immediately became one of the most exciting and intriguing players in the sport alongside O'Neal, who had signed with the Lakers as a free agent. Bryant won the Slam Dunk Contest as an upstart rookie, and the Lakers gradually grew into a team that won three consecutive championships.

Bryant and Gasol formed the nucleus of another championship team in 2008, reaching three straight NBA Finals and eventually winning two more titles.

In 2003, Bryant was charged with attacking a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort. He had said the two had consensual sex. Prosecutors later dropped the felony sexual assault charge against Bryant at the request of the accuser.
