Record-breaking England Rout Australia to Seal ODI Series Win

Nottingham, Jun 20: England posted the highest total ever scored in a men's one-day international of 481 for six as they thrashed Australia by 242 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in a five-match series.

Alex Hales (147) and Jonny Bairstow (139) both hit hundreds as, for the second time in two years at Trent Bridge, England posted a new record ODI score following their 444 for three against Pakistan at Nottinghamshire's headquarters in 2016.

This was Australia's heaviest defeat at this level, in terms of runs, surpassing a 206-run loss to New Zealand in Adelaide in 1986.

By contrast, England were able to enjoy their biggest victory in the format as they topped their previous ODI best -- 210-run success against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2015.

The 62 boundaries England struck in their innings was also a new record at this level, surpassing the 59 managed by Sri Lanka against the Netherlands, a non-Test nation, in Amstelveen, 12 years ago.

Faced with a massive target of 482, Australia -- missing star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner, both given year-long bans for their roles in March's ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town -- slumped to 239 all out with 13 overs left in the match.

England spinners Adil Rashid (four for 47) and Moeen Ali (three for 28), with a mountain of runs behind them, shared seven wickets.

Bairstow's hundred was his fourth in six ODIs while Hales's century on his Nottinghamshire home ground ended a run of low scores.

Meanwhile England captain Eoin Morgan became the country's all-time leading run-scorer in this format during a 67 that featured 21-ball fifty -- England's quickest in men's ODIs.

"It was amazing," Bairstow told Sky Sports during the mid-innings break. "This ground is a special ground for us. It always tends to bring something exciting -- what a pitch it is."

Hales added: "We've had some great memories here as a team and today is another special day.

"The 500 was murmured when Morg (Morgan) came out but we just couldn't get there," he added

Jason Roy, who made 120 in England's 38-run win in the second ODI in Cardiff on Sunday, could have had back-to-back hundreds but instead ran himself out on 82.

England might even have scored 500 had not Hales and Morgan -- returning after being ruled out in Cardiff with a back spasm -- been dismissed off successive deliveries to leave them 459 for five off 47.3 overs.

Australia captain Tim Paine used eight bowlers before the 25th over, having sent England into bat.

But an attack missing injured Ashes-winning fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, struggled for line and length in overcast conditions on a ground favouring swing bowling, with medium-pacer Andrew Tye's nine wicketless overs costing 100 runs.

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar thought he had Bairstow lbw for 27 when he missed a sweep but the batsman's review showed the ball, surprisingly, missing leg stump.

Bairstow, on 30, skyed a drive off Tye but Marcus Stoinis failed to hold an extremely tough chance as he ran back from mid-on.

Australia, however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.

But Hales was quickly into his stride with three fours in four balls off medium-pacer Stoinis.

It was off Australia's eighth bowler, left-arm wrist spinner D'Arcy Short, that Bairstow hit a huge six over deep midwicket to reach a 69-ball hundred including 11 fours and four sixes.

Bairstow eventually hammered Agar to Richardson at deep midwicket.

Hales -- who also faced 92 balls -- was caught in the deep off Richardson, having hit 16 fours and five sixes on a ground where he made 171 in an ODI against Pakistan two years ago.

Next ball Morgan, whose tally of 5,443 ODI runs for England in 180 matches has now surpassed Ian Bell's 5416 in 161 -- also holed out.

Melbourne, Jul 21: Cricket Australia's chief executive Nick Hockley has said that the Indian players and staff will most likely be asked to face two weeks of quarantine before the four-match Test series.

This scenario will bring the Adelaide Oval and its newly constructed hotel firmly into view as the sort of biosecure bubble, ESPNCricinfo reported.

India and Australia are slated to face each other in a four-match Test series, which is to begin from December 4 at Brisbane.

"The two-week quarantine is pretty well-defined. What we are working on is making sure that even within that quarantine environment, the players have got the absolute best training facilities, so that their preparation for the matches is as optimal as it can possibly be," ESPNCricinfo quoted Hockey as saying.

"Certainly the fact that the Adelaide Oval has a hotel. It does provide a facility not dissimilar to Old Trafford or Ageas Bowl where the hotels are integrated into the venue," he added.

Hockley also said that an exacting standard of biosecurity and testing would be applied before the series against India as the coronavirus cases are spiking in the subcontinent.

"It's widely known and it's unlikely that international travel restrictions would have lifted by the time that India will be due to come into the country. Clearly there will be testing regimes. We will be able to test people before that they get on to the plane and it is the nature of the situation of making sure we have the quarantine arrangements in line with government and health authority protocols," Hockley said.

"The key thing for the players is that there's regular testing and that we appropriately quarantine them when they come in and all of those plans are currently in development," he added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020 slated to be held in Australia from October 18-November 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Following the announcement, the BCCI is likely to go ahead with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the October-November window. However, it is known where the T20 tournament will be played as cases continue to rise in India.
"I think the BCCI has made no secrets that they are considering what that means for the IPL. For us, it's about getting a bit of an understanding and certainty around what that means. Clearly, in a normal course, some of our best players are obviously top picks for those IPL teams," Hockley said.

"It's a bit premature to speculate on that. We need to understand what the plans are if any and once we understand that we will make decisions accordingly," he added.

Jeddah, Jan 9: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde criticised the new Supercopa format and said that "football has become a business and as a business it looks for income".

"The bottom line is football has become a business and as a business it looks for income. That's the reason we are all here," Goal.com quoted Valverde as saying ahead of Barca's semi-final against Atletico.

"It's a completely different format to what we're used to. It was always the first title and the opener of the season and to me, that seemed fine," he added.

The Supercopa was traditionally a two-legged affair played between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the season, but following last term's one-off meeting between Barca and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) went ahead with a full revamp.

Instead of just two teams being involved, the Supercopa has been expanded to also include the runners-up from La Liga and the Copa - meaning Barca and Valencia are joined by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It is also set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the next three editions.

"It's been changed and let's see, it will be judged once it has happened. It's interesting, with four good teams, but from a sporting point of view, I'm not sure," Valverde said.

"We must bear in mind that the football we are involved in is an industry, sources of income are sought and in the same way that there are special connotations in this country, there are also in Morocco, where we played last year," he added.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Supercopa at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on January 10.

Hamilton, Jan 30: Caught unaware about the Super Over scenario, Rohit Sharma took five minutes to “find” his abdomen guard after the third T20 International against New Zealand had ended in a tie on Wednesday.

The India vice-captain said the team had almost given up with New Zealand going great guns at one point.

“Everything was packed. All my stuff was inside my bag. I had to get it out. It literally took me five minutes to find my abdomen guard because I didn’t know where it was,” Rohit said.

“I mean we never thought it would go to the Super Over, the way they were batting at one point. It looked like they could easily win the game,” he added.
