Bhopal/Indore, Dec 6: Eighteen years after Samundar Singh brutally stabbed a Catholic nun in Madhya Pradesh and flung her on the roadside to bleed to death, the former convict has been invited to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican.

The nun, Sister Rani Maria, was stabbed 54 times inside a packed Indore-bound bus passing through Udainagar village in Dewas in February 1995. The nun died by the roadside.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia from the Vatican invited Singh on behalf of the Pope through Swami Sadanand, a Catholic priest based at Chhindwara district.

The Pope was moved after watching a documentary film - The Heart of a Murderer - by award-winning Australian-Italian director Catherine McGilvray. This film depicts the ghastly crime and the power of forgiveness.

The slain nun's younger sister Selmy and Swami Sadanand have also been invited to attend the special screening of the documentary in Rome in the first week of March. Pope Francis will attend the function.

The message was conveyed to the Chhindwara-based priest Swami Sadanand through email, said church sources.

However, neither Sadanand nor Samundar Singh has a passport to travel to Rome. "I have not received any official confirmation and don't have a passport. I have lost all necessary documents to get one," Samundar Singh said.

Pope also wants to meet Sadanand as he was instrumental in 'changing the heart' of Singh, who spent 11 years and 6 months in jail after murdering Sister Maria.

In 1995, Samundar Singh acted at the behest of some landlords who opposed the nun's work among poor farm labourers. The nun had boarded the bus from Udainagar in Dewas and was on her way to Kerala. Singh, who was 22 years old at that time, was arrested and sentenced to death. His sentence was

later commuted to life term. Singh was freed in 2006 after serving the jail term and now earns his livelihood through farming at his village, 50 km from district headquarters.

Family members of the slain nun had forgiven him and accepted him a member of their family. Her younger sister Selmy - who is also a Catholic nun - ties a rakhi every year since he was in jail.

May 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said many states were amending labour laws, but the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse to exploit workers, suppress their voice and crush their human rights.

Gandhi said there cannot be any compromise on the basic principles by allowing unsafe workplaces.

"Many states are amending labour laws. We are together fighting against corona, but this cannot be an excuse to crush human rights, allow unsafe workplaces, exploit workers and suppress their voice," he said.

"There cannot be any compromise on these basic principles," he added.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also said it would be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environment laws in the name of economic revival and stimulus.

"In the name of economic revival and stimulus, it will be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environmental laws and regulations as the Modi govt is planning.

"The first steps have already been taken. This is a quack remedy like demonetisation," Ramesh tweeted.

Thane, Feb 28: Former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta was on Friday charged for allegedly  raping and harassing a woman corporator in Bhayandar, which is in the Thane district near Mumbai, on Friday, police said.

His associate Sanjay Tharthare has also been charged in the case, they said.

The district rural police lodged an FIR against Narendra Mehta, who resigned from the BJP three days ago, and his associate, an official from the Mira-Bhayandar police station said.

No arrest has been made till now.

A video of the corporator purportedly speaking about the alleged harassment and abuse she suffered at the hands of Narendra Mehta went viral on social media two days ago, the official said.

The corporator has alleged that the abuse is going on since 1999 and her family is facing threats from him, he added.

Narendra Mehta and Sanjay Tharthare were charged under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code for rape and other relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, he said.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik demanded the immediate arrest of Narendra Mehta, saying it is a "tragedy" that the BJP, which raises the issue of women's safety in the state, has not taken any action against its leader.

"Law and order issue will arise if such a person (facing rape and harassment charges) roams freely. He should be arrested as soon as possible," Mr Sarnaik said.

The Thane legislator also termed Narendra Mehta as "Marathi-hater" and alleged that he had once questioned Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's culture.

"I wonder why the BJP did not take strict action against Mehta, it needs to introspect," Mr Sarnaik said.
