Regional centre of RGUHS to come up in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 30: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences will open its regional centre at Kavoor in Mangaluru, according to RGUHS Vice-Chancellor S. Sacchidanand.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Saturday, the VC said it will be one of the four regional centres of the university coming up in the State. The RGUHS planned to have its regional centres in Mangaluru, Davangere, Kalaburagi, and Belagavi.

“The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner has agreed to allocate land in Kavoor,” he said. This regional institute will also have a sports complex that will boost the sports activities of 70 affiliated institutes in the region.

The Regional Centre in Davangere will have a new academic building that will boost academic activities. The Regional Centre in Belagavi will have a cultural centre that will be used to hold the university’s cultural programmes, the Vice-Chancellor said.

RGUHS Registrar (Evaluation) K.B. Lingegowda said the university hopes to start the regional centre in Mangaluru by next year. The Vice-Chancellor said that RGUHS was encouraging research and earmarked ₹20 crore for 2018-19. One of the research was on dengue, which has a high mortality rate. “The research is on early detection of persons likely to have Dengue Shock Syndrome.”

The research was being conducted for the two years by the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, the Kempegowda Instiute of Medical Sciences, St. Johns Medical College, and M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in association with the Indian Institute of Science, he said.

The university has been encouraging research at the undergraduate level by giving offering financial support of ₹15,000 for each research. “These are small research works which we encourage students to take up.” Of the 471 applications, RGUHS accepted 271 research proposals and has provided financial assistance, Dr. Sacchidanand said.

The university will start the Department of Placement and Career Development this year to help nursing, pharmacy and other healthcare course students get jobs. “There is lot of demand for healthcare professionals abroad. We do not want our students to be taken for a ride by middlemen.” Apart from direct contact with employers, the department will hold sessions to develop skills necessary.

Karnataka govt to build guest house for Kannadiga pilgrims in Ayodhya

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Anticipating a huge number of pilgrims from Karnataka to start visiting Ayodhya following the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday requested his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath for two acres of land to build a 'yatri nivas' (guest house).

"A large number of pilgrims from Karnataka would be visiting Ayodhya. The government of Karnataka wishes to construct a yatri nivas for the pilgrims visiting Ayodhya," Yediyurappa wrote to Yogi.

"I request you to grant two acres of land in Ayodhya for this purpose," he said.

The Chief Minister said the yatri nivas will be constructed for the benefit of pilgrims from the southern state.

He also congratulated the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for successfully laying the foundation stone for the Ram temple on Wednesday.

'Siddaramaiah clinically stable, responding to covid treatment'

Bengaluru, Aug 7: The condition of former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, is clinically stable and he is responding to COVID-19 treatment, the hospital authorities said on Friday.

"Leader of the opposition and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is clinically stable and responding to COVID-19 treatment. He is comfortable and his appetite has improved. Our team of experts will continue to monitor him closely," Manipal Hospital said in a health bulletin.

Siddaramaiah had informed on Twitter on August 4 that he tested positive for COVID-19 and admitted himself to a hospital.

Since then, he had been active on twitter and attacked the BS Yediyurappa government in Karnataka over their handling of COVID-19 and heavy rainfall situation.

Earlier on Friday morning, Siddaramaiah remembered Nobel laureate and poet Rabindranath Tagore on his death anniversary.

The former Chief Minister of Karnataka also condoled the demise of Karnataka State Wakf Board chairman Dr Mohammed Yusuf on Friday.

‘No pvt hospital in Karnataka can turn away patients irrespective of covid status’

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.
