Religion row: Decision on expert panel deferred

Bengaluru, Oct 5: A meeting between Veerashaiva and Lingayat leaders held on Wednesday on the formation of a committee to determine a common ground, remained inconclusive as both the camps failed to iron out differences.

The Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha wants Veerashaiva-Lingayat to become a religion, whereas the Lingayat camp argues that Lingayat is a religion in itself with Veerashaiva being a sub-sect.

Leaders from both the camps met at the residence of Mahasabha president and senior Cobgress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, where both stuck to their stands. Also, no concrete decision was taken on the formation of an expert committee that will determine a common ground on which the demand for a separate religion will be made.

The leaders decided to meet again on October 10 as Lingayat leaders wanted retired IAS officer S M Jaamdar, who has been hospitalised, to join the talks.

Earlier in the day, the Lingayat camp trained its guns on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s ideological parent, accusing its leaders of trying to sabotage the movement for a separate religion tag for the Lingayat faith.

Water Resources Minister M B Patil, Mines and Geology Minister Vinay Kulkarni and JD(S) leader Basavaraj Horatti in unison called for a boycott of the RSS. “We appeal to Lingayat youths that if they have any self-respect, they must quit the RSS,” Patil told reporters.

“The RSS has no business poking its nose in the Lingayat religion movement. Su Ramanna has insulted the entire Lingayat community, including holy seers. If Ramanna and the RSS leadership do not tender an apology, there will be widespread protests in front of all RSS offices across the state,” Patil warned.

The call for Lingayat swayamsevaks to quit the RSS could deal a blow to the BJP, which depends heavily on its Lingayat vote base. Patil, however, denied any political move behind targetting the RSS.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on completion of one year of his government, today said coronavirus hampered his development plans for the state.

He said the state will not see a lockdown again "at any cost".

"Due to coronavirus we couldn't meet people's expectations but now we'll not have lockdown in Karnataka at any cost. In future we're going to fulfill whatever I announced in Budget. If necessary we'll take loans and complete all development work," said Yediyurappa.

"Covid has hampered development plans of Karnataka, lot more needs to be done, i'm committed to providing an able, stable government," he said.

Arrangements were made for virtual celebrations to mark the one-year anniversary of Yediyurappa government at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Social distancing was maintained at the event.

A record 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.

So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka. Karnataka is the only state to have over 50,000 active cases with overall tally below 1 lakh.

Bengaluru , Mar 21: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar exuded confidence that the party will return to power in the state and praised former chief minister Siddaramaiah's term.

"I am confident that we will come back to power. Everyone in the past has worked their best to build the party. Siddaramaiah being a full-term chief minister gave the best programs to Karnataka, his government's programs were the best of all time," Shivakumar said at a press conference on Friday.

He further assured his full support to anyone who wanted to work for the betterment of the party.

"Though I have become the state president of the party but I am still the worker of Congress and each of us should work for the party as ground workers. I am ready to give any kind of support to those who want to work for the party. We need to take all caste, communities along for the betterment of the party," he said.

Shivakumar was appointed the state Congress President on March 11, while Eshwar Khandre, Satish Jarkiholi, and Saleem Ahmed have been appointed working presidents of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.
