Restore my freedom, allow me to follow Islam and live with my husband: Hadiya tells SC

Akhila alias Hadiya, a Kerala girl whose marriage to a Muslim man was annulled by Kerala High Court in a controversial judgment last year, has told the Supreme Court she wanted to exercise her freedom of religion and choice of marriage.

In an affidavit, Akhila, who was renamed Hadiya after conversion, contended that she was a Muslim and wanted to live like a Muslim.

She also sought permission to live with her husband Shafin Jahan as a couple because she embraced Islam and married him on her own free will.

"I have been under confinement without the freedom that I am entitled to. Even now I am under police surveillance. I most humbly pray that my entire liberty may kindly be restored to me," her 25-page affidavit stated.

A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had in November sent the 25-year-old woman to Salem in Tamil Nadu to pursue her studies after taking her out of the custody of parents.

Her father Asokan K M had alleged that her husband was merely a "stooge" in a "well-organised conversion machinery". However, Hadiya has repeatedly said that she embraced even before meeting Shafin Jahan.

The court had earlier on January 23 questioned the NIA, probing instances of Hindu girls marrying to Muslim men and larger conspiracy into such marriages in Kerala.

Only those who are rightly guided can embrace Islam. Driving a male or female to a right path is under the control of Allah (swt), the creator of the whole universe. It is an unskippable responsibility of the human being that they worship Allah alone. We should realize the truth that there a life after death, where we will be questioned about our acts of worships.

Based on that our Heaven & Hell will be decided. It is the duty of every muslim to convey the message oneness of Allah (worship him alone). Those who accept Islam from their heart, you can turn them away, even you cut them into pieces.

Islam never accepts a forced conversion, unless accepted by your own will. The recently used term "LOVE JIHAD" is nothing but a Bullshit.

Mangaluru, May 26: In the wake of mounting case of covid-19 in the coastal Karnataka, the police department has decided to sanitise the police stations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The superintendents of police in both the districts have been instructed to take necessary steps for sanitisation of stations in a phased manner, according to Devajyoti Ray, inspector-general of police (Western Range).

Meanwhile, the top cops of Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru that forms part of the Western Range have been asked to take a call on doing so. “Hebri police station in Udupi was sanitised as part of this process and not because of any positive case emerging from staff there,” he said.

Allaying fears over stations being sealed down over positive case among station staff, Karnataka police chief Praveen Sood said this is a temporary measure and stations do not become non-functional.

“It is just that, for a mandated period police station will function from different premise when the station is being sanitised,” he said.

Noting that policemen are quarantined as precautionary measure, he said additional staff can be drafted from other stations or districts if need for it arises.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: The much awaited Southwest Monsoon entered Karnataka with widespread rain in coastal and central regions of the southern state, an official said on Friday. Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over coastal areas and at a few places over the interior parts over the next 24-48 hours.

"The southwest monsoon entered the state on Thursday as predicted from Kerala and the Arabian Sea, with moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal districts and central or Malnad region of the state," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre Director Srinivas Reddy told media here.

Though the monsoon has set in on time in the state, Reddy said its progress was likely to be slow in the next three days, as cyclone Nisarga induced high-speed winds took away rain-bearing clouds from the southern peninsula.

According to the regional meteorological office, Karwar in Uttar Kannada district received a whopping 15cm rainfall on Thursday, followed by 11cm each at Kundapur in Udupi district and Shivamogga in Malnad region.

Kadra and Gersoppa in Uttara Kannada and Kottigehara in Chikkamagaluru district had 10cm rainfall, followed by 8cm at Virajpet in Kodagu district and 7cm each at Shirali and Gokarana in Uttara Kannda.

Isolated to scattered rainfall also occurred in many places across the north and south interior regions of the state.

"The monsoon will advance in the state to south and north interior areas after June 8 as there is lull in its movement due to lack of rain-bearing clouds and winds to carry them," said Reddy.

Noting that the four-month monsoon from June to September, crucial to the rain-dependent state would be normal this year, Reddy said its progress and spread, however, would depend on various factors like cloud formations and wind movements.

"Conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon advancement in the state over the next 2-3 days," asserted Reddy.
