Mangaluru, May 18: The results of recent Karnataka assembly polls have once again proved that there is no future for any other party except the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada at least for next few years.

As many as 58 candidates were in the fray in eight assembly constituencies of the district. The BJP has won seven out of eight constituencies and lost one to Congress. The seven defeated MLA candidates from Congress and one from BJP have managed secure sufficient votes to claim their deposits. However all other 42 candidates have lost their deposits.

As per the Representation of Peoples Act, a candidate retains his deposit if he secures more than 1/6 of the total votes polled. The deposit losers include four candidates from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), five from the Janata Dal (Secular) and seven from the newly-formed All India Mahila Empowerment Party (MEP).

CPI(M) leader Muneer Katipalla who had expressed his confidence to win from Mangaluru North, managed to secure only 2,472 votes, probably lesser than the total number of CPI (M) workers/supporters in the constituency.

Party hopper K Ashraf, who had poised to defeat former minister U T Khader in Mangaluru constituency, could secure only 3,692 votes in spite of rigorous campaign by the JD(S). Former BJP leader Srikar Prabhu, who had contested as independent candidate in Mangaluru South too has lost his deposit.

Bengaluru, May 28: A complaint has been filed against BJP Karnataka state president and Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel by the Congress Legislators charging him with issuing false information on Coronavirus to mislead the people.

The complaint was filed by MLCs Ivan D’Souza and Prakash Rathod at Vidhana Soudha police station on Thursday.

In the complaint they had alleged that “Kateel has been spreading false information that the position of World Health Organization’s (WHO) Chairman was given to India in appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s achievement in Coronavirus management.

In reality, the position was given to India on the basis of rotation. India’s stature gets affected because of such childish statements at the international level.”

New Delhi, Jun 7: The Karnataka government has asked the railways to make announcements at originating stations that it was compulsory for passengers travelling to the state to register themselves on the ‘Seva Sindhu’ portal through which they can be tracked.

In a letter to Chairman Railway Board on Saturday, Chief Secretary of the state T M Vijay Bhaskar said many passengers are not aware of this mandatory rule of the southern state.

He said thousands of passengers are coming to Karnataka from New Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra and other states through trains everyday, but most of them are not registered under the Seva Sindhu portal of the Government of Kamataka.

"If passengers are not registered under Seva Sindhu, the state will not be able to track them. Therefore, it is necessary to create awareness among the passengers regarding registration under the portal.

"Hence, it is requested to give instructions to origin railway stations to make announcements that ‘It is compulsory for all passengers travelling to Karnataka to register in Seva Sindhu portal. Otherwise they will not be allowed for home quarantine’, and also to give passengers awareness (about this) at the time of booking tickets,” Bhaskar said in his letter to the national transporter.

Seva Sindhu portal, under the control of the Karnataka government, provides various online services to the citizens of the state.

Currently, this portal is playing an important role in helping those stranded amid the COVID-19 pandemic to fill online registration forms for availing e-passes.
