Revised remunerative price for sugarcane from Centre will not benefit farmers in Karnataka

Mysuru, Sept 16: The Centre’s decision to revise the fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane from Rs. 2,550 per tonne to Rs. 2,750 per tonne for 2018-19 has left the sugarcane cultivators in Karnataka unimpressed.

Though this is seemingly a significant increase in the procurement price that will benefit the farmers, the Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association has pointed out that there is a rider associated with the hike like the FRP is linked to a base sugar recovery rate of 10 per cent as against 9.5 per cent which existed all these years. And this goes against a majority of the farmers in the region where the recovery rate is low.

Kurubur Shanthakumar, President, Sugarcane Cultivators Association, told uni that earlier the FRP was Rs. 2,550 for a sugar recovery rate of 9.5 per cent.

Mangaluru, May 3: Dakshina Kannada in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary today announced that there will be partial lockdown relaxations in the district from tomorrow (May 4) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The district falls under orange zone as per the classification done by the union government to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Poojary said that shops can remain open for 12 hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). However, this relaxation will not apply for malls, restaurants, beauty parlors, saloons and dental clinics. 

Even though bars can remain open, they can only sell liquor. People will not be allowed to consume anything inside the bar. 

In auto-rickshaws only one passenger will be allowed to travel apart from driver and in car two passengers will be allowed apart from driver. 

The relaxations come with strict protocols, which the people need to follow, he said, adding that the relief had been provided to make life easier and not for people to come out unnecessarily.

Mangaluru, May 22: Dakshina Kannada today reported a fresh case of coronavirus infection, taking the coastal district's tally to 62. 

The new patient is a 29-year-old womon, who was under instituional quarantine monitored by the district administration in Belthangady. 

She had returned from Mumbai on May 18. Her throat swabs were sent for covid-19 testing on the following day and today she received positive result.

Out of the 62 covid-19 cases detected in Dakshina Kannada so far, only 50 are residents of the district. Among 12 others 4 are from Kasaragod and 3 from Karkala, 2 each from Uttara Kannada and Mumbai, and 1 from Kalaburgi.
