Rishad Premji urges Wipro employees to take father Azim Premji’s work to newer heights

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Wipro's Chairman-designate Rishad Premji on Friday urged thousands of Wiproites to take the work of IT czar Azim Premji to newer heights.

"As Premji retires on July 30, leaving behind a rich legacy, the only way to thank and express gratitude to him is to take his global software major to newer heights," said Rishad Premji in an e-mail to the employees a day after the company's board appointed him to the top executive post.

Rishad Premji, 41, is the eldest son of 73-year-old billionaire Azim Premji, who built a tiny business in to a successful firm in a span of 53 years as its Chairman and Managing Director since his return from the US in 1966. His return followed the sudden death of his father Muhammed Hashim Premji, who founded Western India Vegetable Products (Wipro) in 1945 to produce cooking or edible oils at Amalner in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, about 410 km northeast of Mumbai.

Noting that his father demonstrated that a successful business could be built ethically and be driven by social purpose, Rishad Premji called upon the techies to chart new paths and win new frontiers while consolidating the company and upholding its rich values.

"Premji's contribution and achievements go beyond the success of our company. He is among the global pioneers of the IT industry. He has reshaped the world of Indian business, demonstrating that success can be achieved with commitment to integrity," Rishad Premji said.

Though Rishad Premji joined the $8.5-billion IT behemoth in 2007, he rose from the ranks to be its Chief Strategy Officer and a whole-time director since September 2010, under the guidance and mentorship of Azim Premji.

"Premji will be on the company's board as a non-executive director and Founder Chairman. He will also invest his time and energy for the philanthropic causes of the Azim Premji Foundation but will always be available for counsel," said Rishad Premji in the e-mail, accessed by IANS.

Observing that the company's belated success touched Azim Premji's social conscience, inspiring him to dedicate the major part of his personal wealth to philanthropy, Rishad Premji said his father served and touched the lives of the most disadvantaged people in the country.

"Our great strength is our people. I know this as I have been a part of the team for the last 12 years and had a chance to work and engage with many of you. Our commitment and focus on our clients powered by technology prowess is at the heart of our success," he said.

Admitting that he was conscious of carrying the company's legacy as his new responsibility, Rishad Premji said he felt a sense of humility and a surge of energy to take over the top post from July 31.

"Humble in success and resilient in adversity is our character. Commitment to our values, always unyielding on integrity, is at our core. It is my privilege to be part of such a team," he added.

Udupi, Feb 8: A rare sixth century granite idol of ‘Lajja Gauri’ has been discovered fixed on the road in Barkur village of Udupi district, according to information furnished by Dr. Shivakant Bajpai, Superintending Archaeologist of ASI Bangalore Circle. Lajja Gauri is depicted in nude form and is said to be a fertility symbol. The idol is rare, though very popular among certain cults.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai, who is on a tour of the coastal districts, said that he first came across the image when it went viral on social media. He subsequently traced it to a public road in Barkur, which is an ancient historical town of coastal Karnataka. It was the ancient capital of the Alupa kingdom and a seat of power for several centuries.

“This is a very important idol and hundreds of vehicles pass over it every day. We are rescuing it and I have issued an order to my local in-charge to keep it in safe custody. I have also sent a mail in this regard to the DC and SP of the district,” he said.

The idol is likely to be of 6th or 7th century, though further study is required to confirm a date, Dr. Bajpai said.

Lajja Gauri is a lotus-headed Hindu deity associated with abundance, fertility and sexuality, sometimes euphemistically described as Lajja ("modesty").

Bengaluru, Jan 23: An alleged low-intensity blast on Wednesday late evening in Shanthinagar left three-time Congress MLA NA Harris and six others with burn injuries. The blast reported at around 8:30 pm during a cultural programme gripped the central parts of Bengaluru in a panic especially after the incident of police recovering a live bomb in Mangaluru airport.

According to sources in Shanthinagar, MLA Harris was attending the birthday celebrations of MGR organized by the locals close to his residence in Shanthinagar. Following the blast, Harris and a few others who standing close to the MLA sustained burn injuries and rushed to the nearby Philomena Hospital immediately and police officials from both the Ashok Nagar and Vivek Nagar visited the spot. The police officials are yet to confirm whether it was a bomb blast or due to the bursting of loud and powerful crackers.

Chethan Singh Rathore, DCP (Central) visited the hospital and the blast site. A team of forensic science lab experts have also been summoned to the spot to collect samples for ascertaining the nature of the blast. MLA Harris’s son Mohammed Nalapad who rushed to the hospital along with supporters told media persons that they are completely shocked by the incident.

“He was sitting on a chair and suddenly something that was hurled at him exploded beneath the chair. He sustained injuries to his leg and brought to the hospital. He is being treated by a team of doctors and other injured supporters are also being attended to by the doctors,” Nalapad said.

Expressing shock over the incident, he said, “My father has been an MLA for 12-years and nothing of this sort had happened before in the constituency. We have no rivals and my father never had any gunmen. We are all shocked and have complained to the jurisdictional police.”

Meantime, Dr Shankar Prasad, Medical Director, St Philomena’s Hospital explained that Harris and others are currently being treated for minor injuries. “None of them have any open cut injuries and they are being examined further,” Dr Prasad told DH.

According to Dr Prasad, Harris had a minor blood clot in his left leg which was possibly due to a hard object hitting him during the blast. “We have taken X-Ray and examining further. At the look of it, it seems like a very minor injury,” he added.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: Amid rising COVID cases in the past two weeks, the Karnataka government is planning to increase testing capacity to 25,000 samples a day, said a minister.

"Due to increase in cases in the last two weeks, the government is trying to scale up testing to 15,000 to 25,000 samples per day," said Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar.

He said people living in crowded places, sanitation workers, street vendors, healthcare workers, police and other frontline staff would be extensively tested.

"It has also been decided to mandatorily test all those who have symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI)," he said.

Similarly, all people over 50 with ILI symptoms will be tested.

The health department will also randomly test samples in old containment zones to make sure that the infection is not recurring.

Currently, there are 72 Covid testing labs in the southern state, 41 government operated and 31 private labs.

However, for a few days, the number of Covid tests in the state have plummeted.

On Monday, the health department has tested only 5,362 samples across the state.

Likewise, on Tuesday, only 7,936 samples were tested, diverging from earlier weeks when around 10,000 cases were tested on an average.

In all, 4.57 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 4.39 lakh have tested negative.
