River Krishna in spate: CM makes aerial survey of flood affected districts

Belagavi, Aug 5: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa made an aerial survey of flood affected districts in North Karnataka, even as the situation continued to be grim and river Krishna is in spate following unabated heavy discharge from Reservoirs in neighbouring Maharashtra State.

Official sources told UNI that, Schools were declared holiday for three days as flood waters have entered School buildings and flowing above knee level on the roads.

The Chief Minister, who took stock of the situation prevailing in worst affected Belagavi, Bagalkote, Raichur, Bijapur and Yadgir Districts, said that Army help was sought and they were deployed along with National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Rescue Force, Fire fighter rescue teams which are working round the clock to rescue stranded people.

The rescued people and animals were housed in Gruel Centers and cow shelters. 

About 1000 people stranded and livestocks were rescued so far from the affected villages on the banks of river Krishna where water is flowing above danger mark. Heavy inflow was reported in to Malaprabha, Ghataprabha reservoirs.

Standing crops in more than 3000 hectres of land were washed out and. Eight gruel centres have been established for displaced people.

Moe than 25 low lying bridge cum barrages have continued to remained under water in three taluks of Belagavi.District. 

Stating that there is no dearth of funds, the Chief Minister said that officials have been instructed to intensify rescue operation and provide all facilities to those rescued and provide sufficient fodder and water to animals rescued.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Udupi, Jun 20: The wife and daughter of a 54-year-old man who succumbed to Covid-19, tested positive for the virus on Saturday.

Sources said that the family returned to Udupi on June 18 and the man died the same day while his wife and daughter tested positive today.

The man and his family had arrived at their house in Thekkatte on Thursday, June 18 afternoon. Later in the day, the man died. He was suffering from jaundice and had arrived from Mumbai in the state of illness.

Bengaluru, July 17: A 60-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 allegedly ended her life in the Covid ward at KC General Hospital in the early hours of Friday.

The woman, the fourth Covid positive patient to end her life since April, was a resident of Mariyappanapalya near Jnanabharathi in West Bengaluru. She was found hanging from a window grille in the passage of the Covid ward around 5 am. She had used her sari to hang herself.

The police said that the woman was admitted to the hospital on July 1. She was responding well to the treatment and was almost cured. Her son was infected first and admitted to the same hospital. As she later tested positive and got admitted, her son was discharged on July 11. The police suspect that the woman may have resorted to the extreme step due to depression.

An investigating officer quoted doctors telling the police that they were about to inform the woman about her discharge date on Friday. Doctors were waiting for the report on her latest test before discharging her.

The woman’s body will be subjected to an autopsy as per the Covid standard procedure. The Malleswaram police have taken up a case of unnatural death. Investigations are on. 

On July 11, a 70-year-old man ended his life in the toilet of the Covid ward in Victoria Hospital, while a suicide was reported in the same ward on June 26. A 60-year-old woman also hanged herself in the toilet. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were also admitted to hospital for Covid-19.
