Riyadh, Ankara vow to end ME turmoil, join forces to fight terror

Riyadh, Oct 1: Saudi Arabia and Turkey have pledged to boost anti-terror cooperation and work more closely to find solutions to the key regional issues that have tossed the whole Middle East region into turmoil.

The pledge was jointly made by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following their two-hour talks in Ankara on Friday.

Erdogan decorated the crown prince with the “Medal of the Republic of Turkey.”

Erdogan said the crown prince has been a real friend of Turkey throughout his life. This medal is one of the highest honors conferred on foreign heads of state, presidents and prime ministers for their contributions in promoting bilateral relations.

Turkish Ambassador Yunus Demirer said: “The whole gamut of bilateral, regional and international issues were discussed by the two leaders.”

The crown prince and the president discussed efforts to combat terrorism, the bloodshed in Syria, intransigence of Iran, the situation in Iraq, strife in Yemen, and the Middle East peace process, besides bilateral cooperation and coordination within the framework of the Saudi-Turkish Strategic Cooperation Council.

Demirer said that the talks between the crown prince and top Turkish officials including Erdogan would give new momentum to the efforts being exerted by the two countries to defuse the crisis in the Middle East region.

“Cooperation between two nations on various issues such as regional security, welfare, and stability were also discussed by the crown prince and Erdogan,” said Adel bin Siraj Mirdad, Saudi ambassador to Turkey.

Three ministerial meetings were also organized on the sidelines of the visit of the crown prince. Ibrahim Al-Assaf, minister of finance; Majid Al-Qassabi, minister of commerce and investment; and Adel Al-Toraifi, minister of culture and information, met their respective Turkish counterparts and discussed subjects of common interests. President Erdogan also hosted a lunch banquet in honor of the crown prince.

Beirut, Aug 7: A devastating explosion that destroyed much of Beirut might have been the result of a missile attack or bomb, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said, as the death toll from the blast rose to 154.

More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate had been sitting in a port warehouse for six years, but there have been conflicting accounts about why Lebanese authorities decided to empty the shipment of explosive material. The vessel carrying the flammable cargo was heading from Georgia to Mozambique when it stopped in the Lebanese port to load up on iron, according to the ship’s captain.

By Friday, 19 suspects had been arrested and Lebanon’s former director general of customs Chafic Merhy had been questioned by military police.

New Delhi, June 24: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has asked Air India to not carry any passengers aboard the repatriation flights to UAE being operated under the Vande Bharat Mission.

As per the Guidelines issued by the General Civil Aviation Authority of United Arab Emirates (UAE)- Safety Decision 2020-01 (Issue 17) Q and A Guidance For Foreign Operators, on June 23, 2020 - transportation of passengers ( UAE Nationals and Non - UAE Nationals) to the United Arab Emirates on the repatriation flights is not allowed.

In view of the foregoing, all passengers including the Indian Nationals who are holding valid Residency Permit / Work Permit of United Arab Emirates and have procured approval of the UAEs Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship- UAE (ICA) of United Arab Emirates or an approval from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) applicable to Dubai would need to have specific approval from the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in New Delhi and their UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC) to travel from India to United Arab Emirates (UAE) on these repatriation flights.

All passengers need to comply with the quarantine and COVID-19 test requirements as per the preventive and the precautionary measures required by the appropriate health authorities, as notified from time to time.

Dubai, Jun 7: Emirates airline on Sunday confirmed that it extended the period of reduced pay for its staff for another three months as airlines around the world struggle to preserve cash due to the grounding of fleets.

An e-mail has been sent across to Emirates employees about extending the wage cuts till September 30. In some cases, the salary will be reduced by 50 per cent.

Emirates had previously reduced basic wages by 25 to 50 per cent for three months from April, with junior employees exempted.

The Dubai-based world's largest international carrier employs around 60,000 people across its spectrum. While the parent Emirates Group employs over 100,000 workers.

On Thursday, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways confirmed to Khaleej Times that it also extended salary cut of its employees till September 2020.

"Regretfully, Etihad has extended its salary reduction until September 2020, with 25 per cent reduction for junior staff and cabin crew, and 50 per cent for employees at manager level and above. Housing allowance and a number of benefits continue to be paid," the airline's spokesperson said in a statement last week.

In March, Etihad had announced temporary reduction of basic salaries for the month of April to all staff, including executives, between 25 to 50 per cent.
