Riyadh governor opens Alzheimer’s conference

Riyadh, Feb 1: On behalf of Prince Ahmad bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, honorary president of the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association (SADA), Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar inaugurated the third International Alzheimer’s Conference at the headquarters of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh on Monday.

Following the inauguration, Prince Saud bin Khalid bin Abdullah bin Abdulrahman, chairman of the SADA board of directors, signed partnership agreements with private-sector organizations including the Saudi Electricity Co., the Saudi Investment Bank, Dallah Al-Baraka Group Holdings, Abdulmohsen Al-Hokair Group and Home Experts Holdings.

Prince Faisal thanked King Salman for exerting immense care in treating the elderly in this program. He also thanked the philanthropists who have come forward via their organizations to help in this venture.

Describing Saudi Arabia as a land blessed with philanthropy, righteousness and solidarity, Prince Faisal said Islam preaches the same principles in treating the elderly in society.

He added that the conference will inform participants of the latest advances in the field of Alzheimer’s, and is a good opportunity for the Kingdom to announce its achievements in treating the disease in the past seven years.

The prince commended the efforts of Princess Madawi bint Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Abdulrahman, vice chairman of the SADA board of directors.

KACST President Prince Dr. Turki bin Saud bin Mohammed also addressed the gathering at the inauguration.

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named after German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906. Scientists have since learned a great deal about the disease.

Alzheimer’s gets worse over time and is fatal. It is the sixth-leading cause of death in the world and the most common form of dementia, a general term for loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.

Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, mixed dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia.

SADA’s vision is to create a world without Alzheimer’s, while optimizing awareness of the disease and the quality of living for affected individuals and their carers.

Apr 18: Taking a strong notice of Islamophobia on social media, Princess Hend Al Qassimi, a member of the royal family of United Arab Emirates, called out a series of tweets by a user named Saurabh Upadhyay.

Upadhyay had posted tweets attacking Muslims over the Tablighi Jamaat congregation held in March in Delhi that led to surge of coronavirus cases cases in India. He also gave into rumours of muslims ‘spiting on food’ to spread the virus.

Princess Qassimi shared the screenshots of his tweets and warned that those engaging in racism and Islamophobia will have to pay penalty and will be made to leave UAE. Upadhyay has apparently deactivated his Twitter handle now.

Responding to his earlier posts, she though the ruling family of UAE is “friends with Indians”, his rudeness was “not welcome”.

“All employees are paid to work, no one comes for free. You make your bread and butter from this land which you scorn and your ridicule will not go unnoticed,” she wrote.

Tehran, Jan 7: Iranian state television says 35 people have been killed and 50 others injured in a stampede that erupted at a funeral procession for a general slain in a US airstrike.

The TV says the stampede erupted in Kerman, the hometown of Gen. Qassem Soleimani where the procession was underway on Tuesday.

A procession in Tehran on Monday drew over 1 million people in the Iranian capital, crowding both main thoroughfares and side streets in Tehran.

Saudi Arabia has initiated refund of work visa fee to foreigners unable to travel to the Kingdom due to the suspension of international flights in the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic.

Several work visas were cancelled, following which the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced the refund. The cancellation and refunding of the stamped visas will be considered effective from the date of issuance of the royal decree on March 18, reported Saudi Gazette.

As a precautionary measure to curb the spread of coronavirus, the Kingdom suspended all international flight. The ministry of health in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday announced 1,325 new Covid-19 coronavirus cases and 169 recoveries. With this, the total number of cases in the Kingdom now stands at 21,402, while recoveries stand at 2,953, as on Wednesday reported KT.
