Kasaragod, Dec 25: A gang of robbers burgled two neighbouring houses at the Muthiyakkal locality in Uduma and decamped with 25 sovereigns of gold ornaments along with US Dollar 3,500 and Indian Rs 15,000 in cash.
The police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
The shocking incident occurred late on Friday as the robbers simultaneously burgled the two unoccupied houses, Bekal station sub-inspector U.P. Vipin said.
The robbers first broke open the rear door of the house of Sunil Kumar, an engineer on a Merchant Navy ship, and decamped with the U.S. dollars equivalent to Rs. 2.24 lakh, besides jewellery worth Rs. 5.34 lakh, Rs. 10,000 in cash, and two expensive mobile phones.
The other group of robbers burgled the nearby house of P. Prabhakaran by climbing up the first floor through the wall.
They gained entry by breaking open the door and decamped with Rs. 5,000 as the occupants had gone out.
The police were verifying the fingerprints obtained from the two houses and the International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers of the stolen mobile phones.
The police have also alerted local currency exchange firms and banks to keep a close watch of people exchanging U.S. dollars, the senior police official said. No persons had been taken into custody in connection with the incidents, he said.
