Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal earn more than Kohli, Dhoni in an IPTL season

March 3, 2016

New Delhi, Mar 3: There is a perception that Indian cricketers are the highest paid sportspersons across the eight domestic leagues in the country. But this notion has been dispelled by a Research Services Agency, Super Insight, which in its document titled 'Indian Sports Salaries Report 2016', has claimed that tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal alone earn double than Indian ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Indian Test captain Virat Kohli for playing in just one season of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).

Roger

Not only this, Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is the most watched league in India in terms of the TRP ratings followed by the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), and not the Indian Premier League (IPL).

London Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt commands the highest advertisement value for a 60-second spot during the leagues at Rs 1.65 lakh per minute, surpassing the likes of cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who earns Rs 1.01 lakh per minute in the IPL followed by Kohli, Dhoni and Suresh Raina (Rs75,000 per minute).

Out of Rs823 crore salaries paid to players in the IPL, IPTL, PWL, PKL, Indian Super League (ISL), Hockey India League (HIL), Premier Badminton League (PBL) and Champions Tennis League (CTL) in India, the domestic players earn just Rs 296 crore as compared to their foreign counterparts, who get a whopping Rs527 crore by featuring in these leagues.

A total of 857 players, 521 Indian and 336 foreign, play in the eight leagues. The Rs1,100 crore ($162 million), earmarked for players' salaries by the eight leagues, is 75 per cent of India's total sports budget.

According to the report, Federer and Nadal are the highest earning players with Rs 26 crore each for playing in the IPTL. While Federer or Nadal's individual earning from IPTL is equal to what all the players in the HIL draw as salaries, if the income of the two taken combined, then also it will be more than that of all players' salaries in PBL, PKL and PWL and HIL. The IPTL's average pay out per player is Rs 5.5 crore, while IPL's is Rs 2.5 crore.

Overall, Indian players rank 36 on the average pay out amongst the players from 73 countries playing in eight leagues. The 169 players considered for this report across the eight IPL teams in 2014-15 earned Rs419.5 crore between them at an average of Rs 2.48 crore per player.

India (44 %) is followed by Australia (11 %), South Africa (6 %), and Switzerland (5 %) as the highest earning countries sending players for playing in the Indian leagues.

The report has been prepared after comprehensively analysing the various sports leagues in India, the cost benefit analysis on players' acquisition deals, the comparative analysis of eight leagues and undertaking valuation of the franchises and leagues.

Rajkot, Jan 16: Skipper Virat Kohli is set to be back at his regular number three position after the strategy of coming two-down boomeranged in the lung-opener as India take on a resolute Australia in the must-win second ODI here on Friday.

India go into the game 0-1 down after Australia registered a 10-wicket win in the lung-opener at Mumbai, courtesy David Warner and Aaron Finch, who hit unbeaten hundreds.

In a bid to field all three in-form players -- Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul --, Kohli dropped himself down the order but the plan backfired spectacularly as he was unable to convert his start.

Opener Dhawan later said he was ready to bat at number three if asked to by the team management, but since Kohli has been successful at that position, the skipper would be more than willing to walk in one-down.

Kohli batting at three also provides stability to the middle-order.

With a concussed Rishabh Pant out of the second game, Rahul is a certainty as he will keep wickets.

So, like in the last game, Rohit and Dhawan, who made a dogged 74 off 91 balls in Wankhede, could open, and there could be a toss-up between Rahul and young Shreyas Iyer at number four. Iyer had a rare failure on Tuesday.

Pant's absence could pave the way for the inclusion of Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey, who made optimum use of the opportunity that he got in the third T20 against Sri Lanka in Pune.

It would also be interesting to see which among the experienced Kedar Jadhav and rookie Shivam Dube makes the squad.

Rohit, who had a phenomenal 2019, failed in the first game, but given the form he is in, the opener is expected to bounce back strongly here.

Ditto for Kohli, who is just one hundred short of equalling cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar's record of most hundreds on home soil for India.

The bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah had a forgettable outing at the Wankhede and they would be more than eager to make a strong comeback and prove their mettle.

Bumrah, since his comeback, has not been as effective as earlier and he would like to change the perception.

It would be interesting to see whether India play Delhi speedster Navdeep Saini or persist with Shardul Thakur, who gave away 43 runs in Mumbai.

Ravindra Jadeja looks a certainty and so the choice would be between chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, who conceded 55 runs in the first ODI and Yuzvendra Chahal as the lead spinner.

On the other hand, a high on confidence Australia will be looking to seal the issue to register back to back series wins in India, a rare feat for any visiting team. The Finch-Warner combination will look forward to carry the momentum.

Their middle-order comprising the experienced Steve Smith, in-form Marnus Labuschange, Ashton Turner and Alex Carey looks more or less settled.

If all of them fire in unison, along with the openers, then it will hard for the opposition bowlers.

However, it will be quite a test of their middle-order at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium.

Australian bowlers also showed at the Wankhede, why they are considered among the best.

Led by pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, they bundled out India for a sub-par 255 and Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins would be raring to go once again.

Spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar, not only contained the runs, but provided crucial breakthroughs and are expected to play a similar role again in the middle overs.

The track here is expected to be a belter and India can draw confidence from the home series against New Zealand in 2017, when they won 2-1 after losing the opener, co-incidentally in Mumbai.

Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, K L Rahul (wicketkeeper), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami.

Australia: Aaron Finch (Captain), Alex Carey (Wicket-keeper), Patrick Cummins, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschange, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner and Adam Zampa.

Match starts at 1.30.

New Delhi, Apr 28: West Indies flamboyant batsman Chris Gayle has lashed out at former teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan calling him 'worse than coronavirus'.

Gayle, the colossal figure in the shortest format of the game blamed Sarwan for his departure from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

The left-handed batsman joined St Lucia Zouks as their marquee player for the 2020 CPL season after Tallawahs chose not to retain him.

Gayle has played for Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the past. He has won the CPL title twice with the Tallawahs and played in the final with the Patriots in 2017.

"The owner of the franchise is a very nice man, I have no problem with him. I think he was actually persuaded to get rid of Chris Gayle," Gayle said in three parts on his YouTube channel.

"So someone has to be in his years telling him to get rid of Gayle. Sarwan, you are worse than the coronavirus right now. What transpired with the Tallahwahs, you had a big part to play.

Sarwan, you are a snake. You know, you are not the most loved person in the Caribbean. You are still stabbing people in the back," he added.

Gayle is the leading T20 run-scorer of all time as well as the man with the most centuries in the format. He is also the leading CPL run-scorer of all time, having amassed 2,344 runs in the tournament.

New Delhi, Jun 2: Manchester United's Paul Pogba on Monday paid tribute to George Floyd, stressing that violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated and they have to stop.

Pogba took to Instagram to write: "During the past few days I have thought a lot about how to express my feelings about what happened in Minneapolis. I felt anger, pity, hatred, indignation, pain, sadness."

"Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism Every day! Whether in football, at work, at school, Anywhere! This has to stop, once and for all! Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end today! Violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated," he added.

Protests erupted in Minneapolis and other US cities on Tuesday after Floyd, an African-American man, died following his arrest by the four officers.

A viral video showed a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning 46-year-old Floyd to the ground with his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd died at a local hospital shortly thereafter.

The four police officers were fired. Chauvin was also charged with murder and manslaughter, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.
