Rowdy has taken supari to eliminate me, claims actor Arjun Dev

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Kannada film actor and Congress party worker Arjun Dev has filed a complaint with the Byatarayanapura police against a rowdy, whom he claims has taken a contract to kill him. He has sought protection from the police.

The police, who initially took up a non-cognisable report (NCR) case, have now registered an FIR following a court order.

The 35-year-old actor claimed that Kashif, a history-sheeter from Islampur, had taken supari (killing contract) to eliminate him. Dev, who lives in Deepanjali Nagar off Mysuru Road, approached the jurisdictional Byatrayanapura police on March 19 and complained about the "death threat". He sought police protection, saying Kashif had even done a recce of his house. The actor said he learnt about the "murder plot" from a well-wisher on March 16.

When the police took up only an NCR case and sent him away, the actor filed a private complaint at a court, which then directed the officers to register a case of criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy under the relevant IPC sections, and investigate it. The police obeyed the court orders.

A police source, however, said the actor's accusations were the fallout of a property dispute between him and another party. The property is in Ramanagaram.

Ravi D Channannavar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said: "We have issued a notice to the complainant to record his statement and I have instructed the ACP to conduct a thorough impartial investigation." Dev acted in a lead role in the Kannada film Yuga Purusha. He is also a local Congress functionary.

Mangaluru, Apr 25: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported another covid-19 case. With this the total number of coronavirus positive case in the district rose to 18 including two deaths. 

The health and family welfare department in its bulletin today announced that a 33-year-old woman from Bantwal tested positive for coronavirus. She is undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital which is now converted into covid-19 hospital. 

She is the daughter of 67-year-old woman from Bantwal who was tested positive for the deadly disease last week. Both are the neighbours of the two women from Bantwal who died of covid-19 recently.

Bengaluru, May 16: Health Minister B Sriramulu has sought the aid of Home department for curbing sex work in certain parts of the state - which continues unabated despite lockdown.

“It poses health risks to those involved. I request the department to ensure that the business is prohibited at such a time of crisis,” he stated in a letter to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.  

At the same time, in order to ensure the safety of these workers, Sriramulu has asked both the Health department and the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) to come up with a detailed report on rehabilitation of sex workers and transgenders.

The Health minister’s order was prompted by a letter by writer and activist Roopa Hassan. The writer, who was earlier member of a panel (led by actor-turned-politician Jayamala) on the study of issues faced by sex workers, had sought government’s intervention to stop condom distribution to registered sex workers and transgenders, as continuing work during pandemic was posing health risks to the community.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: All those who met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who has tested positive for Covid-19, in the last three-four days will have to be quarantined, Medical Education Minister Sudhakar K said on Monday.

He also said those who came in contact with Yediyurappa in a couple of programmes in the past week are being traced.

Sudhakar, a medical doctor himself, said Yediyurappa has "very mild cough and his chest is clear."

"I think eight to ten days," he told news agency when asked how long the Chief Minister would have to remain in hospital.

Sudhakar said he is also getting himself tested as a few of his office staff had tested positive.

"All those who met the Chief Minister in the last 3-4 days...ideally they should be quarantined till they receive their results/report. Those who came in contact with him in a couple of programmes will have to isolate themselves and subject themselves for testing," the Minister said.

On the Chief Minister meeting Governor Vajubhai Vala, along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai last Friday, Sudhakar said as a result "They also become primary contacts. Ideally, they should also be quarantined and tested."

Yediyurappa who was hospitalised on Sunday night after testing positive for Covid-19 was "doing well" and is "clinically stable", the hospital treating him said.

The 77-year old leader is being monitored by a team of doctors at the Manipal hospital here.

"He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team," the hospital said in a statement late last night.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," Yediyurappa had said in his tweet.

Yediyurappa was in home quarantine a couple of weeks ago, after some staff members in his home office were found infected with the virus. Subsequently, he tested negative for Covid-19.
