Kalaburagi, Aug 2: Mallikarjun alias Kari Chirathe, a history-sheeter and an associate of gangster Market Satish, was shot dead in an encounter on the outskirts of Kalaburagi on Tuesday morning.

He was wanted in 11 criminal cases including murder, attempt to murder, kidnap, extortion and robbery. Three policemen, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) S.S. Hullur, were injured in the exchange of fire.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of armed policemen, led by Mr. Hullur, rushed to the area near Ashraya Colony in Naganahalli on the outskirts of the city and spotted Mallikarjun and three of his associates at about 7.30 a.m.

The police said that the gang members began to flee on two-wheelers when the raiding team asked them to surrender and even opened fire in the air. However, Mallikarjun opened fire at the policemen in retaliation and injured Mr. Hullur and Anand and Sreeshaila, police constables attached to Rural Police station. The police, who, however, were in bullet-proof jackets, too opened fire at the gang and killed Mallikarjun on the spot while his three associates managed to escape from the scene.

According to the police, Mallikarjun was involved in the assault on Sreekanth Reddy on March 28 and was arrested subsequently. He came out of jail on May 17 and carried on with his life of crime.

He kidnapped Lakshmikanth Karadali, a native of Nandoor village, for ransom and murdered Karadali within four hours of the abduction. The family members of the victim did not even lodge a complaint as Mallikarjun had threatened them with serious consequences. Yet, the police provided protection to the family.

The police said that Market Satish, the leader of the gang, who, along with his associates, is in jail under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act, was operating through Mallikarjun who was out on bail.
