Rs 1070-Cr budget for Jain festival; Karnataka seeks central aid

New Delhi, Dec 9: Karnataka Minister A Manju today called on Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma and sought central assistance for organising the biggest Jain festival, ‘Mahamastakabhisheka’, in Hassan district which is estimated to cost Rs 1,070 crore.

Celebrated once in 12 years, the ‘Mahamastakabhisheka’ — the anointment of Gomateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district — will be held between February 7 and February 26 next year.

 The state government has released Rs 263 crore for organising the festival, out of which Rs 88 crore is for upgrading infrastructure such as roads, he said.

The funds are being utilised for creating temporary and permanent infrastructure for the benefit of devotees, tourists and visitors, he said in an official statement.

Manju, also chairman of the Mahamastabhisheka committee, told the Union minister that the Karnataka chief minister had written letters in February to the prime minister and the finance minister seeking central aid.

The state minister said that funds have also been earmarked for various projects including preserving the hills, setting up higher seat of education for Prakrit languages, creating a library and research centre for historians. In 2006, the Centre had allocated Rs 30 crore for the festival, while the state spent Rs 90 crore.

New Delhi, Jul 28: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Sadananda Gowda on Monday said that India has proved that it is the "pharmacy of the world" in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference here, Gowda said, "India is often referred to as 'the pharmacy of the world' and this has been proved true especially in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when India continued to export critical life-saving medicines to the countries."

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandviya said that three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores.

"Three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores. Four medical device parks will also be developed with a government grant of Rs 100 crores for one park," Mandaviya said.

Madikeri, May 30: Environmentalists have opposed the Karnataka Forest Department and the Public Works Department’s move to erect concrete pillars and marking of trees to construct a proposed road from Patti to Todikana within the Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary near Talacauvery in Kodagu District.

They have urged for immediate stopping of road works in a protected area.

In a letter to Conservator of Forests, Mysuru Circle, T Heeralal and DCF (Territorial and In-charge Wildlife) S Prabhakaran, the Trustees of Wildlife First K M Chinnappa and A A Poovaiah have termed the road works illegal and violates Supreme Court order on National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries.

The letter’s copy has also been sent to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force), and Kodagu Deputy Commissioner urging them to halt the progress of the road works. “Patti and Todikana are at the core of the Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and such unilateral activities without complete approval on completion of the statutorily mandated procedure (both under Forest Conservation Act and Wild Life Protection Act),” the letter stated.

The letter added that they would be forced to move the Courts and the officers who have given approval to the project would face legal consequences.

Bengaluru, Apr 29: A fire incident was reported inside the premises of the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Wednesday morning.

According to official sources, the fire was noticed at the Forge and Foundry division in the HAL complex and as many as eight fire tenders are engaged in fighting the mishap.

According to initial reports, the fire was noticed at a stockyard, where magnesium stockpile caught fire.

The fire fighters had cordoned off the entire area in the vicinity and the fire has been contained.

No casualties had been reported, due to the incident, the sources added.
