'RSS dictionary' used for anti-Sonia article, says Congress leader, seeks probe

Mumbai, Dec 29: City unit Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam on Monday came under intense criticism from his party over articles in a Congress mouthpiece slamming Jawaharlal Nehru and Sonia Gandhi's father, with a senior leader claiming that terminology used in the write-ups was borrowed from the "RSS dictionary".

NirupamAccusing Nirupam, the journal editor, of bringing "disgrace" to the party on the occasion of its 131st Foundation Day, former minister Naseem Khan demanded his ouster from the post even as Shiv Sena and BJP latched onto the blooper and ridiculed the city unit chief.

"The kind of terminology used in compiling the articles was derived from the dictionary of RSS. I demand senior party leaders to take this issue very seriously and conduct a detail inquiry by relieving (Sanjay) Nirupam from the post," said Khan who had held several important portfolios in the previous Congress-led governments.

While one article in Hindi journal 'Congress Darshan' questioned Nehru's China policy, another called Congress president Sonia Gandhi's father a "fascist soldier", leaving the party red-faced.

Meanwhile, Nirupam apologized over the issue and sacked its editorial content in charge Sudhir Joshi today.

Taking potshots at the Congress, BJP's Madhav Bhandari said the write-ups contained nothing new and that "the truth we have been pointing at has now come out".

"Whatever we and all other opposition parties have been saying since long was vindicated today. Congress never thought it necessary to reply to the burning issues on the party leadership, but today its mouthpiece has replied (to) everything," he said.

Stating that Nirupam cannot escape his responsibility as editor of the magazine, Bhandari said, "Any article that does not bear the name of its writer is credited to have been written by editor only, hence Nirupam cannot absolve himself from the responsibility (sic)".

In a sarcastic attack, Shiv Sena "congratulated" Nirupam, a former Shiv Sainik, for "telling truth" to nation.

"We must congratulate Sanjay Nirupam for his boldness to tell the truth about the party's (Congress) icon (Nehru), though this could be a factor of embarrassment for that party," said Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande.

Idukki, Jun 8: Devikulam MLA S Rajendran from CPM along with supporters staged a protest by blocking the Munnar-Udumalpet interstate highway here on Monday, demanding that action to be taken to prevent wild elephants entering into human settlements and destroying properties.

The protest started at 9.30 am and demand was made that senior forest officials should give them assurance of putting an end to the problem.

A police team led by Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Kumar was camping in the area.

Wild elephants from the nearby forest are frequently trespassing into Munnar and last night two elephants destroyed a vegetable shop in the town.

If it was a lone elephant that the locals nicknamed as Padayappa that used to enter the human settlement, now along with him a baby elephant is also coming to the town at night.

The locals have named the second elephant Ganeshan. Though there were instances of them destroying crops and eating from vegetable shops, till now the duo has not attacked humans.

New Delhi, Jan 8: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh has filed a complaint over the violence that took place at the varsity campus on Sunday.

"I am filing this complaint for the incident in which a mob conspired and acted with common intention to assault, intimidate and attempt to murder me, and request you to register an FIR and apprehend culprits at the earliest," the complaint read.

She said that on January 5, in the afternoon, she received information from students in the campus that some students affiliated to ABVP along with other unidentified men and women had gathered with weapons like rods, sledgehammers and lathis near Ganga Bus Stop.

"I along with Nikhil Mathew (MA Labour Studies) who was also present there, were surrounded by a group of persons of that mob most of whom were wearing masks. The mob of 20-30 persons dragged me behind a car standing near the 24*7 and surrounded me and despite my pleading did not let me go and attacked me with rods while I had fallen down. I remember that one of the people was of medium height wearing a brownish-red sweatshirt with UCLA written on it. I saw his face as he was facing me and did not have a mask on and can identify him if I see him," Ghosh wrote in her complaint.

"I was attacked by the above-mentioned persons collectively and was hit on the head multiple times with iron rods. I fell to the ground and my head started bleeding, and some of them kicked me and hit me with the rod on my hand and rest of the body including my head, chest and back."

"I am attaching with this complaint a copy of the MLC which details my injuries. Nikhil Mathew tried to save me but was also hit with an iron hammer and other weapons on his head and arms. The intention of the group of men and their acts was definitely to murder me and other persons associated with me," she said.
