Shillong, Jan 24: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday said it had extended support to the Congress during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

rssindiraThe RSS took out its `Path Sanchalan` (procession) here in the capital of Christian-majority state Meghalaya with a mission to unite India.

The Sangh also appealed to the people in the state not to believe media reports or allegations made by "divisive forces" about the organization.

"The RSS is a nationalist organisation. We had also supported then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 in the interest of India," RSS pracharak Sunil Mohanty in-charge of Arunachal Pradesh told journalists here in Meghalaya.

"Any political party or any social organisation which is contributing towards the nationalistic cause, definitely the RSS will help. But for instance, if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does anything which harms the national integration, how can we support?" he said.

Recently, a Meghalaya Congress minister Zenith M. Sangma had alleged that the RSS is helping the BJP in Meghalaya keeping in mind the 2018 Assembly polls.

Nearly 800 RSS cadres - mostly from the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities from 41 villages in 10 districts across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills areas - donning its new uniform - brownish trousers and white shirts and armed with sticks marched from Madan Iewrynghep to Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School playground.

For the second consecutive year, the RSS cadres took out a march in Shillong to pay tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 120th birth anniversary

"People should not judge the RSS without understanding its work. You should not develop any `fear` about the `socio-cultural` body," Mohanty told the gathering.

Exhorting the tribesmen in northeastern states not to judge the RSS without understanding its work, Mohanty said, "There are a lot of misgivings about the RSS. But the RSS aims to unite the country. You may belong to any group or any religion, but we are all brothers and sisters of India."

He said the RSS works for character building of the individual, and through these, to build up a strong organisation in order to take the country to the pinnacle of development.

"Development should be all-round. A developed India will bring peace in the world, and India has tremendous quality to lead the world," Mohanty said.

Belagavi, Feb 22: A madrasa in Karnataka’s Belagavi district hosted a Hindu-Muslim mass marriage on its premises on Friday, sending a strong message of communal amity. As many as 76 Muslim couples and 25 Hindu couples entered marital life on the occasion.

Madarsa Al Arabia Anwarul Ulooma, an Islamic religious institute in Bailhongal, 50km from Belagavi district headquarters, played host to the event that was organised by Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran and Issa Foundation, which has conducted mass marriages on a bigger scale in Gujarat.

The mass marriage comes a month after the 100-year-old Cheravally Jamaat Masjid in Kerala’s Kayamkulam in Alappuzha hosted a Hindu wedding, complete with a vegetarian feast for 4,000 people. A Hindu priest led the rituals, and the couple sought the blessings of chief imam Riyasudeen Faizy of the mosque.

At Bailhongal, moulvis and pontiffs led the marriage proceedings and asked the couples to read passages from Quran and Bhagvad Gita.

The Hindu couples were gifted a copy of the Gita, and newly-married Muslim couples received a copy of Quran. The organisers provided each Hindu bride a mangalsutra. Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalagi blessed the couples at the event, which was attended by more than 4,000 people.

Mohammad Rafique A Naik, a member of Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran, said they have gifted each couple a refrigerator, an almirah and a tailoring machine. Ranjita Kalala, a bride who married a daily-wage labourer, said her family couldn’t afford the cost of a wedding, adding, “When we learnt about the Bailhongal madrassa’s plan, we agreed to sign up because it also sends out a message of communal harmony.”

Bidar, Feb 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded the State government to withdraw the sedition case against a mother and a teacher of Shaheen school immediately.

“The police can’t execute anything without the government’s permission. The sedition case against two women should be withdrawn immediately. I will raise the matter in the Assembly to draw the government’s attention,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after meeting the woman at the prison here.

He clarified that he visited the woman not to support the school, but to extend moral support to her.

“I am an advocate and I can clearly establish based on my experience that staging a satirical play doesn’t amount for sedition. It doesn’t even defame anybody. Three cases of sedition have been registered across the state,” he charged.

He alleged that the government was following dual policy. Though the Supreme Court had concluded that the demolition of Babri Masjid was illegal, a play dealing with the demolition was staged at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s school.
The sedition case had not been registered for staging the play.

He charged that there was an undeclared emergency in the country as the freedom of expression was being suppressed.
