Ruckus over Gaza: RS adjourned twice during Question Hour

July 17, 2014

New Delhi, Jul 17: Congress-led Opposition today created ruckus in Rajya Sabha over a discussion on violence in Gaza not being listed in the day's agenda, leading to two adjournments during the Question Hour.RajyaSabha

As soon as the House met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari said though the matter was included in yesterday's agenda, it has not been done so today following a request from Leader of the House Arun Jaitley that the issue ''may not be taken up on July 17 and that the Government will communicate an appropriate date for the same soon.''

This infuriated members of Congress and other parties in the Opposition.

Quoting rules, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma insisted that once a matter has been included in the list of business, it becomes the property of the House and must be listed the very next day.

Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) also supported Sharma saying dropping the issue from the agenda would amount to violation of the Constitution.

He said though a communication has been received from Jaitely for having the discussion on another date, the reason for it has not been given.

Sharad Yadav (JD-U) said many Indians earn their livelihood in West Asia and thus, the matter concerned many people here.

Members also wanted to know why the discussion on the issue was being delayed, particularly after the violence was condemned by BRICS leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The issue was raised as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yesterday sent a letter to the Chairman requesting him to withdraw the issue from the day's agenda.

In his ruling today, Ansari said he was "unable to accede to the request" of Swaraj that the demand for discussion is inadmissible as he did not find any "infirmity in the notice given by" Leader of the Opposition and others.

Amid din, Ansari adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

When the House reassembled, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad urged the Chair to suspend the Question Hour and take up a discussion on the issue.

V Maitreyan (AIADMK) stood up and demanded that the Question Hour be taken up, much to the anger of Congress and other parties.

Amid uproar, Ansari adjourned the Hosue till noon.

Lucknow, Jan 12: The controversy over renowned Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz's iconic poem 'Hum dekhenge' may have caused an upheaval in the literary world but it has also helped in resurrecting the famous poet for the young generations.

Students and young professionals are making a beeline for books on Faiz, his biography and his poems and book sellers are ordering supplies of Faiz books.

"Earlier, we sold hardly one book in a month or on Faiz but after the controversy, people are curious to know more about the poet and his poems. We have placed orders for the entire literary range on Faiz Ahmad Faiz," said a leading book seller in Hazratganj in Lucknow.

The bookseller said that the highest demand was for books written in Devnagri script.

"Not many in the young generation can read or write Urdu so they prefer Devnagri," the book seller said.

In Kanpur, most of the leading bookshops have already run out of stocks and book stalls in the ongoing Handloom Expo are drawing huge crowds for Faiz books.

Suchita Srivastava, B.Ed student in Kanpur said, "I have never been fond of Urdu poetry because I do not understand much of the language but after the controversy, I want to read poems of Faiz to understand what he wanted to say. I am taking help of Google to understand difficult words in Urdu."

Krishna Rao, another student at the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, said that since books on Faiz had been sold out, he had ordered a Kindle edition and was reading them.

"Reading his poems actually widens one's perspective of things and becomes even more precious if you take into account the time and context in which they were written," he said.

New Delhi, Feb 17: Four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder will be hanged on March 3 at 6 am a Delhi court said on Monday.

The Patiala House Court on Monday issued fresh death warrants against four convicts while hearing a petition by the state and Nirbhaya's parents.

Earlier, Delhi High Court on February 5 granted a week's time to the four convicts to avail of all legal remedies available to them and said that the convicts cannot be hanged separately since they were convicted for the same crime.

A Delhi Court had earlier issued a death warrant against the four convicts -- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh -- on January 7 and they were scheduled to be executed on January 22 at Tihar Jail. Later, the execution was suspended indefinitely by a Delhi court.
