Saalumarada Thimmakka wants to return Rs 10L cheque to govt

Bengaluru Jan 11: Award-winning environmentalist Saalumarada Thimmakka has sought an appointment with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to return a cheque of Rs 10 lakh that was presented to her, to meet her medical expenses.

She has also sought that the government withdraw her monthly old age pension benefit.

The 106-year-old is upset with the government for its nonchalance concerning her health and well-being.

In a strongly worded three-page letter (dated December 29) to Siddaramaiah, Thimmakka said that the government had failed to act on the many assurances given to her over the last few years.

When it was brought to the government's notice that she was burdened with piling medical bills owing to frequent hospitalisation, Siddaramaiah had presented her with a cheque for Rs 10 lakh on October 27, 2017. At that time, he had assured that the government would fulfil all the promises made to her on previous occasions.

"Just because I am a Dalit woman, I have been reduced to this state. I have realised that nobody should be recognised or rewarded on the basis of caste," her letter says.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka has said that state was prepared to tackle COVID-19 and flood situation.

"Today I had a meeting with officials from disaster management, housing, Police, agriculture departments. The government is ready to tackle both the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the flood situation," he told news agency.

The minister said he had held a meeting with officials to take precautionary measures.
"I sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the Fire Department to purchase the equipment for rescue operations. I have already announced red alert in six districts. Tomorrow, I will visit Kodagu, Chikmagalur to assess rescue operations. NDRF reached have teams for rescue operations," he said.

"We are monitoring all dams. Last time we got more floods because of dams. I have instructed to all district collectors that 70 per cent water be filled in dams. Remaining water be sent to canals. We are expecting more rains in nine districts this year," he added.

Mysuru, Jun 18: The Karnataka government's proposal announced on Thursday to hold online classes for students amid concerns over COVID-19 has not gone down well with thousands of tribal students residing in villages across the state.

A team from Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) visited a few tribal hamlets in Mysuru and Kodagu recently and found that the students, unlike their urban counterparts, lack accessibility to not just smartphones and computers, but basic necessities like power supply.

''When such is the situation in the tribal hamlets, how can you expect students to catch up on their studies if classes are held online?'' wondered M L Parashurama Member, KSCPCR, who toured villages like Thithimathi, Beematagere, Devamachchi and Gaddadi in Kodagu's Virajpet taluk, besides Bavali, Balyadi, Machchuru, and Anemone in Mysuru's HD Kote taluk along with Chairperson Antony Sebastian.

Tumakuru, Jan 8: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat stoked controversy on Wednesday by stating that 'Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is full of traitors'.

He was addressing the media after taking part in a pro-CAA rally organised by National Citizens Forum near the office of the deputy commissioner of the district here.

Bhat said, “JNU is full of traitors. Congress and communist parties have been generating anti-nationals there. But there is no need to close the university down. Modi government will handle it.”

“Nationalism should be infused among the students there through love and trust. They should be made to realize what the truth is,” he said.
