Sack staff who can't speak Kannada: KDA tells banks

Bengaluru: Aug 8: Employees in nationalised as well as private banks in the state should learn Kannada within the next six months or else they should be dismissed, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has said.

In a letter to nationalised, scheduled and rural bank zonal managers on Monday, KDA chairman S G Siddaramaiah said Kannada should get primacy in the administrative affairs of all banks in the state.

“The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection clarifies in the application form (for jobs in banking sector) that preference should be given to candidates who can speak local languages. There is also a provision in rules for dismissing the personnel who have not learnt Kannada,” the letter says.

“All information should be provided in Kannada so that people can conduct all the affairs in banking easily. The Reserve Bank of India has made this clear in its guidelines,” Siddaramaiah stated in the letter.

Noting that many banks were disregarding the rules, he said the staff in many banks do not give information in Kannada by using the three-language formula as a ruse. “Banks are not interested in implementing local languages. This has affected many poor and rural people,” he said.

The letter directs bank officials to submit a report on implementing Kannada. “I will visit banks soon and take stock of the situation,” the KDA chairman said in the letter.

Shivamogga, Aug 5: Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa on Wednesday hailed the laying of foundation stone (bhoomi pujan) for a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and said "Kashi Vishwanath and "Krishna Janmasthan temples have to be liberated".

"It is a good day that the foundation stone for Ram Temple has been laid. A beautiful temple will come up, but there are Kashi Vishwanath and Krishna Janmasthan temples which have to be liberated," Eshwarappa said.

The minister said that there is a "sign of slavery" at Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

"The whole nation is dreaming of Shri Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple. I have visited the two temples. 

There is a sign of slavery. Mosques are there at holy places. When I visited the place at Mathura, I witnessed the wall. When we look at the wall, we feel like we are still slaves," he said.

"While visiting Kashi, there is also a structure of slavery. Dream of Hindus is fulfilled in Ayodhya. One day, it will be fulfilled in Mathura and Kashi. Mathura Sri Krishna and Kashi Vishwanath will be freed and temple will be built," Eshwarappa added.

The Places of Worship Act, enacted in 1991, says that religious character of a place of worship existing on the August 15, 1947 shall continue to be the same as it existed on that day. The Act kept Ayodhya case out of its purview.

Bengaluru, May 1: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on the occasion of International Labour Day has appealed to migrant workers in the state to stay back and co-operate with it in resuming economic activities once the Central government issues further directions.

"It is my sincere request to all the migrant workers to stay back in the state and co-operate with us to resume the economic activities once we receive directions from Union Government," Yediyurappa said in a release issued by the CMO.

"COVID-19 situation in India is much better than other countries because of people's cooperation.

We intend to resume economic activities soon. The government has already held a meeting with representatives of associations of commerce and industry in this regard. The government has also appealed to the employers to protect the interest of their workers and pay salaries," he added.

The ongoing nationwide lockdown, imposed to contain the coronavirus spread, is scheduled to end on May 3.

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Muslims in coastal Karnataka will celebrate the Eid al-Adha on July 31, confirmed Islamic

Twaka Ahmed Musliyar, Qadhi of Managluru, has made this announcement following the crescent moon sighting in region. 

Today was the last day of Dhu al Qaeda and tomorrow (Wednesday, July 22) will be the first day of the month Dhu al Hijja.

The Eid al Adha always falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijja.

In most of the middle eastern countries including Saudi Arabia too Eid will be celebrated on the same day.
