Saffron doors still open for old ally

October 20, 2014

New Delhi, Oct 20: The BJP on Sunday indicated that its door had not been shut on the estranged ally, Shiv Sena, and constituted a two-member team of observers comprising Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and general secretary J P Nadda, the two leaders whom the Sena seems to prefer at the negotiating table.

Sena BJPLed by Rajnath Singh, the team will first hold consultations with the newly elected party MLAs to choose their leader and then hunt for allies.

BJP sources said the move to make Singh an observer along with Nadda hints that the party is willing to renegotiate with the Sena. Ahead of the polls, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had said that if Singh was leading the party, the alliance would have remained intact.

However, the BJP would like the Sena to accept it as a big brother this time. To begin with, the government can be formed only after the Sena accepts its BJP candidate. To keep the Sena on tenterhooks, the party did not reject the unconditional support offered by the NCP.

At the evening meeting of the party’s highest decision making body, the parliamentary board, which is headed by president Amit Shah, the BJP tasked senior leaders M Venkaiah Naidu and Dinesh Sharma to act as observers in forming its first government in Haryana.

Rajnath Singh said the party has not yet decided on chief ministers for Maharashtra or Haryana.

Sources said Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as the frontrunner for the post in Maharashtra. Election in-charge Om Mathur offering him laddoo in Mumbai after the verdict is being seen as pointers to his popularity among probables.

Fadnavis, a Brahmin, is also close to Sena leaders.

The others following him are Eknath Khadse and Vinod Tawade. Pankaja Munde, daughter of former Union minister Gopinath Munde, has been ruled out for the top slot despite her throwing hat in the ring.

In Haryana, the names that are doing the rounds for the top slot are that of Manohar Lal Khattar, party state president Ram Bilash Sharma, who is close to the RSS, Union ministers Krishan Pal Gujjar, Rao Inderjit Singh and Capt Abhimanyu. After the meeting, Nadda told reporters about the party’s view: “The results demonstrate that the people have voted for the credible leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his four-month-old government’s welfare measures.”

Nadda equally praised the organisational skills of party president Amit Shah and said, “The poll outcome shows that the Congress has been reduced to the third place in both states due to corruption and misgovernance.”

Ayodhya, Jul 18: The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lay the foundation stone of a grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya either on August 3 or 5, both auspicious dates, said a spokesperson.

PM Modi had announced the formation of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust on February 5.

Mahant Kamal Nayan Das, the spokesperson of Ram Mandir Trust president Nritya Gopal Das said, "We have suggested two auspicious dates -- August 3 and 5 -- for the prime minister's visit based on calculations of movements of stars and planets."

After a protracted legal tussle, the Supreme Court had on November 9 last year paved the way for the construction of a Ram Temple by a Trust at the disputed site in Ayodhya and directed the Centre to allot an alternative 5-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi, Feb 16: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said everyone is unhappy in the society and constantly agitating notwithstanding a "many-fold rise" in materialistic comforts and pleasures.

Addressing a gathering of Sangh workers and intellectuals here in Gujarat, Mr Bhagwat also said that even political parties who are not in power are also agitating.

"Inspite of increase in comforts and materialistic pleasures, everyone is unhappy and is staging agitations. Be it owner or servant, a party in opposition, the common man students, teachers, everyone is unhappy and dissatisfied," the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief said.

He was speaking on the topic "India's Role in the Present World Context".

Mr Bhagwat further said that bigotry, violence and terrorism are on the rise in the present world.

"India has to give 'dharma'  (wisdom) to the world so that knowledge spreads but humans do not become robotic. We have always talked about the concept of global family but not global market," he said.

The lecture was organised by "Madhav Smruti Nyas", an organisation backed by the RSS.

"To think that we are living in a better world is a half truth. Facilities are not evenly distributed. Rule of Jungle is prevailing. A capable person is crushing the weak to climb up. Knowledge is used more for the destruction of the world," the Sangh chief said.

Mr Bhagwat said people are also misusing social media by spreading "false information" to create controversies.

He also stated that trying to put "everyone into one uniform" is also a form of bigotry.

"US and Russia are super powers. China would become a super power too. Now, what super power nations did to others? They just took control of other countries for their own selfish agenda. These super powers gave it back only when they were asked to do so. Otherwise, they never gave anything to others," said Mr Bhagwat.

Jun 8: Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 60 paisa per litre on Monday, for the second day in a row, as state-owned oil firms reverted to daily price revisions after a 83-day hiatus.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 72.46 per litre from Rs 71.86 on Sunday, while diesel rates were increased to Rs 70.59 a litre from Rs 69.99, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

This is the second daily increase in rates in a row. Oil companies had on Sunday raised prices by 60 paisa per litre on both petrol and diesel after ending a 83-day hiatus in daily rate revision.

Daily price revision has restarted, an oil company official said.

While oil PSUs have regularly revised ATF and LPG prices, they had since March 16 kept petrol and diesel prices on hold, ostensibly on account of extreme volatility in the international oil markets.

Auto fuel prices were frozen soon after the government raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 3 per litre each to mop up gains arising from falling international rates.

The government on May 6 again raised excise duties by Rs 10 per litre on petrol and Rs 13 per litre on diesel.

Oil companies, instead of passing on the excise hike to consumers, decided to adjust them against the reduction required because of the drop in international oil prices. They used the same tool and did not pass on the Re 1 per litre hike required for switching over to ultra-clean BS-VI grade fuel from April 1.
