Saffron groups slam Karnataka govt's move to set up Bababudangiri panel

Chikkamagaluru, Jun 4: The Sangh Parivar has strongly opposed the Congress government's decision to set up a 3-member committee to examine the Bababudangiri-Datta Peetha controversy. The BJP and other saffron groups have charged the state government with adopting dilatory tactics to keep the controversy alive for political gain.peeta

The government recently said a committee headed by a retired high court judge and comprising two non-officio members would look into title claims over the shrine located in a cave atop Bababudangiri hills in Chikkamagaluru district.

The government attributed the move to the Supreme Court's (SC) directive on finding an amicable solution to the controversy, which has turned into a communal tinderbox in recent years. While the Hindus want the shrine to be declared a Hindu place of worship, the hereditary administrator of the place, Syed Ghouse Mohiuddin Shah Khadri, has opposed it. On March 27, the SC gave the state government six weeks to find a solution, and that deadline ended on May 9.

It was in this backdrop that law minister T B Jayachandra announced the committee and said: "The views of both parties will be heard before the recommendations are made to the government."

But the BJP said the government's move is eyewash. The party's Sringeri MLA D N Jeevraraj said: "Setting up another committee is nothing but a political strategy to create rift among Hindus and Muslims with an eye on the elections. Instead of putting an end to the dispute, the government has taken the issue back to square one."

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) sources said: "The Congress doesn't want to antagonize any community in the run-up to the polls."

BJP state general secretary and Chikkamagaluru MLA C T Ravi said: "The Siddaramaiah government has adopted former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao's strategy of putting controversial issues on the backburner by setting up a committee."

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: In the wake of coronavirus, the Council of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has taken steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the city as a task force has been formed to monitor home delivery of essentials and the situation prevailing in the city due to outbreak of the virus.

MCC commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde held a meeting of wholesalers to plan the smooth supply of essentials to the people on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, the wholesalers of the city have been directed to supply essential goods to apartments in the city. Each apartment should prepare purchase details and must hand it over to the wholesalers. This way residents will not have to go out to buy essentials. The purchasing time will be between 6 am to 12 pm.

Bengaluru, Jul 25: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said that the ministers of the BJP-led government in the state avoiding a judicial enquiry into the alleged corruption in procurement of medical essentials "is their height of arrogance".

In a series of tweets, Siddaramaiah said, "Why is the government afraid of judicial enquiry on corruption in procurement of medical essentials? If the ministers are so clean, what is holding them back from initiating investigation? This is their heights of arrogance!!"

He said that there should be a judicial enquiry by a sitting High Court Judge to let people know the facts.

"We will submit our documents and let the government submit their documents. If they are confident, why are they reluctant to initiate an investigation?" Siddaramaiah asked.

"Statment from the PMO says 50,000 ventilators are procured at a rate of Rs 4 lakhs per unit. Is this not true? Will Karnataka BJP ministers say that ventilators under PM CARES are sub-standard and lack quality?" he said.

"There will be both basic and premium models in everything. Even the PMO could have bought Rs. 18 lakh worth ventilator. Why did they buy a Rs 4 lakh worth ventilator? What is the justification from ministers for this?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah asked that if the Medical Education Department sent a proposal worth Rs 815 crores which is not recomended by experts.
"It is true that Medical Education department has sent a proposal worth Rs 815 crores. It is also true that there is a note on the proposal which says that these are not recommended by experts. What is the significance of this note?" he tweeted.

The former Chief Minister said that if the state government is saying that if ventilators were procured during the tenure of Congress-JD(S) government, they must produce the proof.

"They are accusing us for the ventilators procured during the coalition government. I was not in the government then. If they have documents, let them investigate about that also. Let the truth be revealed," he said.

The Congress leader said that the opposition is not interested in playing politics during the time of COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are not interested in doing politics during COVID-19 pandemic, which is why we have not taken up many other pressing issues. But how can we be quiet when hundreds of people are succumbing due COVID-19 mismanagement?" he asked.

Karnataka on Friday reported 5,007 more COVID-19 cases and 110 deaths. The total number of cases in the state stands at 85,870, including 52,791 active cases and 1,724 fatalities, said the state government's bulletin.
