Gurugram, Aug 3: Two saffron extremists beat up a Muslim dhaba owner and forcibly shaved off his beard after tying him to a chair at Hari Nagar in Gurugram near the national capital. They also called him a “Pakistani”.

Three persons, including the hairdresser, have been arrested in this connection.

Jafruddin and his cook Ibrahim had gone to a salon for a haircut on July 31 around 6 p.m. when two young men got into an altercation with them without provocation and shaved off his beard. The FIR stated that Jafruddin had gone to buy vegetables along with Ibrahim, when the latter asked him to accompany him to the salon.

“When I reached the salon, two young men were already present there. After they were done, one of them asked me to get my beard shaved off. I refused saying that my religion did not permit it,” said Jafruddin, a resident of Badli village in Nuh’s Punhana block.

The matter escalated and the two young men allegedly abused him, beat him up and labelled him a “Pakistani”. “They said I was from Pakistan since I had refused to get my beard shaved off. The two men then tied me up to the chair with a scarf and threatened to kill me,” said Jafruddin.

When the hairdresser Ikhlas, also a Muslim, refused to shave off Jafruddin’s beard, the accused beat him up as well and tried to cut the beard with a razor on their own, the FIR stated. At this point, Ikhlas took the razor from them and shaved off Jafruddin’s beard.

Jafruddin said that he tried to call the Police Control Room soon after the incident, but the phone did not connect. “I was too scared to go the police station and went back home in Nuh. It was only after I told my family and villagers about the incident that they decided to take up the matter with the police,” said Jafruddin.

Station House Officer, Sector-37 Police Station, Inspector Jaibir Singh said a case was registered on charges of hurting religious sentiments, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Mr. Singh said that Gaurav, Nitin and hairdresser Ikhlas were arrested in this connection.

Gaurav belongs to Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh and Nitin is from Rohtak in Haryana. Ikhlas belongs to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. While Gaurav is unemployed, Nitin works at a private company. Both stay on rent in different localities in Gurugram.

Wajid Khan Nehru Yuva Sangathan Welfare Society chairman Hazid Shahzad Khan said the attacks on the minorities and the Scheduled Castes were on a rise in Gurugram and there prevailed an atmosphere of fear. He demanded that the government take immediate steps to tackle the situation.

May 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said many states were amending labour laws, but the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse to exploit workers, suppress their voice and crush their human rights.

Gandhi said there cannot be any compromise on the basic principles by allowing unsafe workplaces.

"Many states are amending labour laws. We are together fighting against corona, but this cannot be an excuse to crush human rights, allow unsafe workplaces, exploit workers and suppress their voice," he said.

"There cannot be any compromise on these basic principles," he added.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also said it would be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environment laws in the name of economic revival and stimulus.

"In the name of economic revival and stimulus, it will be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environmental laws and regulations as the Modi govt is planning.

"The first steps have already been taken. This is a quack remedy like demonetisation," Ramesh tweeted.

Jun 10: In a suspected case of honor killing in Telangana, a 20-year old woman was allegedly smothered to death by her parents for being in love with a man from another caste, becoming pregnant and refusing to undergo an abortion, police said on Tuesday.

The parents killed their daughter using a pillow while she was asleep in the early hours of June 7 in their house in Kalukuntla in Jogulamba-Gadwal district and sought to project it as natural death, claiming she died of a heart attack.

However, following specific information and suspicion raised by the village secretary over the death of the woman, a college student, a probe was launched and the couple arrested on charges of murder under Indian Penal Code section 302 after post-mortem, police said.

The parents decided to kill the woman, the youngest of their three daughters, a day after she was found pregnant and refused to undergo an abortion, police said.

The woman had fallen in love with the man while pursuing her degree course in Kurnool district in neighboring Andhra Pradesh and informed her parents about it after she was found pregnant during an examination by a doctor. Her parents feared that their daughter may elope with her lover and brought pressure on her to go for abortion.

Though initially, she agreed, later she declined, following which they killed her and told everyone that their daughter died of heart attack, the police official said. When a police team went to their house and insisted on a post-mortem after noticing some marks on her body indicating a struggle, the parents tried to stop it, saying there was no need.

Later, police shifted the body to a hospital where a post-mortem revealed the woman was "throttled to death". Her parents during interrogation confessed to killing their daughter, the official said, adding they were arrested.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Hit hard by coronavirus, budget carrier IndiGo today announced that it will cut salaries of senior employees. IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta, who will himself take a 25% cut in salary, said senior vice presidents and above are taking a 20% pay cut while vice presidents and cockpit crew are taking a 15% pay cut.

With precipitous drop in revenues, the very survival of airline industry is now at stake, Dutta said while announcing the pay cut. "We have to pay careful attention to our cash flow so that we do not run out of cash," Dutta said adding that he knew how hard it was for families to take a cut in "take-home pay".

"With a great deal of reluctance and a deep sense of regret, we are therefore instituting pay cuts for all employees, excluding Bands A and B, starting April 1, 2020," the chief executive officer said. Band A and B are the lowest brackets in salary class, where most of the employees are.

IndiGo's flight operations chief Ashim Mitra had written an email to pilots this morning saying that the economic environment has deteriorated significantly and no airline is insulated from this severe downturn.

"It has become a necessity to initiate some tough calls and we are working on a string of measures that will be shared and implemented over the next few days and weeks," Mitra said.

With countries sealing their borders partially or fully across the world due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, aviation sector has been hit extremely hard as most airlines globally have drastically curtailed their flight operations.

Another budget airline GoAir has already terminated contracts of expat pilots amid curtailed operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Citing "unprecedented" decline in air travel, the budget carrier announced it was suspending international operations and offering leave without pay programme to its staff on a rotational basis.

Government-owned Air India may also cut salary of employees by 5% amid its growing financial woes particularly in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has nearly grounded its entire international operations. The reduction will be across the board, according to a PTI report.

The loss-making airline, which is in the process of a second attempt of privatization after failing to get a single buyer nearly two years ago, has already taken some steps such as reduced flying allowances to cabin crew besides withdrawing entertainment allowance to executive pilots, among others.

“Air India is considering a 5 per cent pay cut to its employees as it faces huge financial crisis due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, which has brought almost its entire international operations save the US, Canada and a few other markets, to the ground," a source told news agency.
