Sahara commits to sell assets to pay Rs 22,500 crore to investors, Subrata Roy to remain in police custody

New Delhi, Mar 4: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it was totally unhappy with Sahara chief Subrata Roy's proposal to refund money to investors.

The apex court said it will send him to custody in Delhi till he comes up with a concrete proposal.

Earlier, Sahara chief Subrata Roy on Tuesday assured the Supreme Court that its order will be followed by him and sought more time for refunding money to investors.

Subrata Roy said that Sahara will sell its assets to pay up the Rs 22,500 crore it owes investors. The sale of properties can start from tomorrow onwards.

Personally arguing his case, Subrata Roy said that while the sale of of assets is on, the company will try to give bank guarantee for rest of the amount which is due to investors.

Subrata Roy added that he wanted one more chance to honour the court order and said that if he failed in this last endeavour, he would come back to stand before the court and accept punishment.

Reacting to this, the SC bench asked why payments were not done for the last one-and-a-half years and why Sahara was giving one excuse after the other.

The Supreme Court said that sale of assets of Sahara group is the responsibility of the company and the apex court would have no role to play except strictly ensuring compliance of its orders.

Subrata Roy also personally tendered an apology for his absence in the Supreme Court on February 26, saying reasons for his absence were very genuine.

"I am sorry for my absence," Subrata Roy said.

The SC bench accepted the apology of the Sahara chief.

Manoj Sharma, who claimed to be an advocate from Gwalior, threw ink at Roy as the latter got out of a car and was heading towards the court amid security personnel and a large number of mediapersons.

"I threw ink at Subrata Roy as he is a thief and has robbed the poor," Sharma shouted, after which he was hurriedly taken away by police.

Roy was brought to Delhi on Monday after he was arrested by the Lucknow police on February 28.

The apex court on February 26 had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Roy for failing to appear before it in person as directed by the court.

New Delhi, Aug 2: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday issued fresh guidelines for international passengers coming to India amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The new guidelines will be implemented from 12:01 am on August 8.

The ministry has also asked all passengers to submit a self-declaration form online at least 72 hours before travel.

"All travellers should submit self-declaration form on the on the online portal (www.newdelhiairport.in) at least 72hours before the scheduled travel," the guidelines said.

It also said that those coming to India must give an undertaking that they would undergo mandatory quarantine for 14 days as prescribed by the government. "They should also give an undertaking on the portal that they would undergo mandatory quarantine for 14 days i.e. 7 days paid institutional quarantine at their own cost, followed by 7 days isolation at home with self-monitoring of health," it added.

Giving exemptions in some cases, the guidelines mentioned, "Only for compelling reasons/cases of human distress such as pregnancy, death in the family. Serious illness and parent (s) with children of 10 years or below, home quarantine may be permitted for 14 days."

"If they wish to seek such exemption, they shall apply to the online portal at least 72 hours before boarding. The decision taken by the government as communicated on the online portal will be final," it said further.

The guidelines further said that travellers could request for exemption from institutional quarantine by submitting a negative RT-PCR test report on arrival.

"This test should have been conducted within 96 hours prior to undertaking the journey. The test report should be uploaded on the portal for consideration," it added.

Passengers have also been asked to download the Aarogya Setu app on their mobile phones.

Kolkata, Jul 20: As many as 13 migrant workers who came to their native village in West Bengal's Bankura district were denied entry at the quarantine centre by the locals.

As a result, the workers had to set up a tent accommodation at a nearby Beraban forest area and lived together in a single tent there, without adequate food, drinking water and basic facilities.

The migrant labourers came from Rajasthan after four months of COVID-19 lockdown which was imposed nationwide on March 25 to contain the spread of coronavirus.

When they arrived at Jagadalla village in the Bankura district and tried to put up at a village school building for two weeks self-quarantine, angry villagers vehemently protested against their entry fearing Covid infections in their village.

Sources said that local police and panchayat members also failed to make the villagers understand the fact that if the labourers strictly stayed in self-quarantine there would be no chance of any further infection.

"The school is located quite within our neighbourhood. If they stay there and tested positive, they might spread Covid infections in the village. We cannot allow them to stay in the school building," said Aniket Goswami, a villager.

New Delhi, Jul 21: With a spike of 37,148 cases and 587 deaths reported in India in the last 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 11,55,191, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of cases include 4,02,529 active cases, 7,24,578 cured/discharged/migrated and 28,084 deaths, the ministry informed.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state with 3,18,695 cases and 12,030 deaths.
The second worst-hit state, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,75,678 COVID-19 cases so far while Delhi has reported 1,23,747 cases, according to the Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, as per the information provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,43,81,303 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to July 20. Of these 3,33,395 were tested yesterday.
