Sakshi touched down in the Capital in the wee hours and was received by the Ministers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Haryana. Haryana's sports and youth affairs minister Anil Vij, who was present in Rio as head of state delegation, accompanied the wrestler on the return flight.

Sakshi then travelled to Bahadurgarh in Jhajjar district, where Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar along with his senior cabinet colleagues Capt Abhimanyu and O P Dhankar, among others, welcomed the star athlete.

At the grand felicitation function at Bahadurgarh, Sakshi was handed a cheque of Rs 2.5 crore by the Chief Minister.

She was also appointed as Haryana's brand ambassador for 'Beti Padhao-Beti Bachao' programme.

"It is a proud moment for us that girls of the country have done so well. Our two daughters, Sakshi Malik and PV Sindhu (who won a silver medal at the Rio Games), have made the nation proud," Khattar said.

He said that sportspersons from Haryana have once again made the country and their state proud.

"Our government is taking a number of steps for the promotion of sports. Sakshi has made everyone proud including her country, her state, besides her coaches, her town Rohtak and her family," Khattar said in the presence of Sakshi's family members.

The CM said Sakshi, who is employed with the Railways, would be soon promoted.

"We have also offered her a Class II job in the Haryana Government. She has said that she will think over it and decide," Khattar said.

On the occasion, Sakshi, in her brief speech, thanked everyone for their support and best wishes.

"I want everyone to support me in future as well so that I can win more medals for my country," she said.

Hailing 'Beti Padhao-Beti Bachao' scheme, Sakshi said, "Now we have added Beti Khilao (encourage girls to take up sports) to this."

The 23-year-old was also honoured with a traditional 'pagri' at Bahadurgarh.

Sakshi, who opened India's medal account at the Rio Games, will make multiple stops before she reaches her native village, Mokhra, later in the day.

Khattar also announced to set up a Sports Nursery and Stadium for Sakshi's village -- Mokhra Khas, which is also known as 'pehalwan village'.

"We took a number of steps for the promotion of sports in the State. In future, we are going to recruit 1000 coaches so that at village and block level sports is encouraged," he said.

Attacking the previous governments, Khattar said stadia were constructed but adequate facilities were not given.

About BJP Government's Sports Policy, he said, "We have decided to catch them young. We will also set up a Sports University."

All the players from Haryana, who participated in the Rio Olympics, would also be given Rs 15 lakh each.

Khattar said that the Haryana Government had decided to give Rs 6 crore to Olympic gold medal winner, an amount which is highest in the world.

Haryana is a state which is infamous for its skewed sex ratio and Sakshi today said upon her arrival at the airport that the girls should be given equal opportunities as boys.

"The girls should be given equal opportunities like boys to express their talent and make the country proud in their chosen field," she said.

Sakshi's father Sukhbir Malik became very emotional when he met his daughter and saw her medal while receiving her at the airport.

"I am proud of her achievements. In fact, not just me, the entire country is proud of her. She has made the country and her state proud. Her medal belongs to India," he said.

He also spoke about people telling him that wrestling was not a sport for the girls.

"Sometimes, some people used to say that she is a girl and this (wrestling) is not good for her. But in 2010, when my daughter won a medal in an event in Russia and later won an Asia Championship, then Commonwealth, everyone then wanted to be like Sakshi and emulate what she had done," Sukhbir said.

Meanwhile, last minute preparations are underway in Sakshi's village to give her a grand welcome.

A number of people have been flocking the wrestler's house to congratulate the family after Sakshi became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal.

Before she heads to her village, Sakshi will make brief stopovers at a couple of villages in Rohtak district, including Ismaila village, where she will meet her maternal uncle.

Northamptonshire, Jul 31: Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez has tested positive for coronavirus, and as a result, he will miss the British Grand Prix.

The Racing Point driver was absent from the circuit on Thursday after self-isolating following what his team called an "inconclusive" test. Perez then re-tested later in the day and it returned positive.

Formula 1 is following a strict testing regime as part of the safety protocols put in place when racing resumed earlier this month, and this is the first time a driver has tested positive.

"Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities," Formula 1 and the FIA said in a statement.

"With the assistance of the local organiser of the British Grand Prix, local health authorities and the FIA COVID-19 delegate, a full track and trace initiative has been undertaken and all close contacts have been quarantined," the statement added.

Jan 30: Three days after Los Angeles basketball great Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others perished in a helicopter crash, his wife, Vanessa, broke her silence with an Instagram message saying she was “completely devastated” by their loss.

The social media text was posted alongside a recent family photo of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant with all four of their daughters - Gianna, who died with her father, along with the couple’s eldest, Natalia, 17, 3-year-old Bianka, and the youngest, Capri, born in June 2019.

Kobe Bryant and the couple’s second daughter, knicknamed Gigi, died on Sunday when the helicopter they were flying in en route to the Mamba Sports Academy for a girl’s basketball tournament crashed in foggy weather on a hillside northwest of Los Angeles.

Gianna Bryant was a member of the Mamba team due to compete that day. Her father, who retired from the National Basketball Association in 2016 after 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, was the coach of his daughter’s team. ]

The pilot and six more passengers were also killed - two other 13-year-old girls involved in the tournament, three of their parents and another coach. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The death of Bryant, 41, an 18-time NBA all-star, five-time Lakers champion and one of the world’s most admired sports figures, unleashed an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow athletes and politicians around the globe.

“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” Vanessa Bryant, 37, a former model, wrote on her Instagram account.

“We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri,” she added.

The message goes on to say: “We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately. There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now.

“I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.”

She directed anyone wishing to “further Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports” to visit the site MambaSports Foundation.org.

There has been no word yet on funeral arrangements.

New Delhi, Jul 28: 'Your character stood out for me than the number of runs you scored," said India skipper Virat Kohli while explaining his decision to give opening Mayank Agarwal a Test debut in the 2018-19 Australia series.

Mayank Agarwal had made his Test debut against Australia in the third Test of the four-match series.

Playing the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Agarwal managed to register a half-century in his very first innings in the longest format.

"I had seen you play for RCB, even then you played international bowlers with conviction and you would take them on. You were performing in first-class matches in a dominating way. That is something always stood out with you, I would say your character stood out for me than the number of runs. I knew you would be fearless without having any baggage," Kohli told Mayank Agarwal in a video posted on the official website of BCCI.

In the longest format of the game, Agarwal has managed to score 974 runs from 11 matches at an average of 57.29 with three centuries as an opening batsman.

The Indian skipper also explained as to what makes him notice in a player and added that it is important that guys in the team look to face new challenges and emerge triumphantly.

"For me, the biggest marker is how a person approaches the game, so for example when you opened and we made Vihari open with you. The first opportunity we presented Vihari to open the batting, he said yes to it and that matters me to the most," Kohli said.

"I opened in my first series for India, I said yes to this opportunity and things worked out fine for me. So, a guy who wants to get into tough situations will come out either holding his head high or learning from his mistakes," he added.

Kohli and Mayank would soon be seen in action for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from September 19 in the UAE.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar keep on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar called time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

At present, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings. Kohli has so far played 86 Tests, scoring 7,240 runs with 27 centuries at an average of 53.62.

His knock of 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019 remains his highest Test score to date. When it comes to ODIs, the current Indian skipper has played 248 matches and has 43 centuries.
