Salman is real No 1, SRK extremely charming: Aamir

December 14, 2013

AamirMumbai, Dec 14: Superstar Aamir Khan, who has been ruling Bollywood along with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan for over 20 years, says there is no secret formula behind their long and successful innings in the industry.

Aamir, who often draws comparison from the two Khans in terms of ranking and popularity, frankly acknowledged that Salman was the real number 1 star and more popular than him.

The 48-year-old actor, who became an overnight star with 1988 blockbuster 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', agreed that the audience in India is star-obsessed but insisted same is not the case with the industry.

"I don't think the industry is star obsessed. It is the audience who is star obsessed and it is not a bad thing at all. As an audience, I am also star obsessed. I am a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Shammi Kapoor. I have been star struck myself," Aamir said in an interview here.

"I think an entertainer has a great role to play in the society and he is often underestimated. I don't think any of us - Salman, Shah Rukh and me - know the secret to our longevity. I wish we knew it."

The 'Raja Hindustani' actor considers Shah Rukh Khan as a seasoned actor, who always brings a smile on viewers' faces.

"I think Shah Rukh is very well loved and fine actor. He is extremely charming and I love to see him on screen. It always brings a smile on your face when you see him," Aamir said.

"I have liked him in films such as 'Dilwale Dhulaniya Le Jayenge', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. I have heard good things about his work in 'Chak De' but I haven't seen it. It is one of the films that I want to watch. There are several other films of Shah Rukh that I have liked," he added.

Aamir is known to be close to Salman and the two are often seen praising each other in public.

"There is always love and warmth in my heart for Salman. I am fond of him, I love him. I personally feel he is a bigger star than me. Because he has the ability to take a film on his shoulders... I don't think I have that capability. I don't have any hesitation in saying that.

"I think Salman manages everything, and according to me, (he) is the real number one," he said

Aamir and Salman have teamed up only once on screen - for 'Andaz Apna Apna' in 1994 - but have always expressed their desire to work again.

The 'Lagaan' star also praised Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor, who is the Hindi film industry's latest heartthrob.

"Sanjay Dutt was fantastic, entertaining in 'Munnabhai' series. I liked Ranbir Kapoor in 'Barfi'. I and Kiran (Aamir's wife) were watching the film together and I asked her "what is it that he is doing and I am not. What I need to learn from him".

Aamir, who is known for his meticulous planning, execution of roles and film production, said he feels happy when movies of his contemporaries do well at the box office.

He appreciates good work of others. "Good work gives me joy. And it does not matter that it is not mine. I don't have that kind of competitive spirit in me."

The 'Taare Zameen Par' director said stars have a limited influence on the box office outcome, but beyond a point it is the film and its content that matters.

"Stars have the potential to influence the first three days of the number of people coming in theatres... beyond that we don't have any influence.

"A lot of people attribute the success of '3 Idiots' to me... (But) it is not my film it is (director) Raju Hirani's film. No film runs on the strength of the star alone.

"I think if a film is not good enough I won't be able to make a mark for myself. When a film is good, it does good business," Aamir added.

Mumbai, Jun 8: Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar has won the 2020 Richard Dawkins Award for critical thinking, holding religious dogma up to scrutiny, advancing human progress and humanist values.

Akhtar has become the first Indian to be given the honour, which recognises a distinguished individual from the field of science, scholarship, education, or entertainment, who publicly proclaims the values of secularism and rationalism and upholding scientific truth.

Akhtar's wife, veteran actor Shabana Azmi said the award's relevance becomes more prominent especially in the current times when secularism is under attack.

"I am thrilled. I know what a hero Richard Dawkins has been for Javed. The award gains all the more significant because in today’s time when secularism is being attacked by religious fundamentalists of all hues, this award comes as a validation of Javed’s long service to rational thinking," Azmi told PTI.

The award is named after world-renowned English evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Actor-comedian Ricky Gervais received the honour last year.

Bollywood celebrities Anil Kapoor and Dia Mirza took to Twitter to congratulate the 75-year-old writer for the recognition.

"Knowing that Richard Dawkins has been your hero since you read 'The Selfish Gene', the prestigious Richard Dawkins Award must be extra special for you @Javedakhtarjadu Saab! It's a truly incredible honour! Congratulations!" Kapoor tweeted.

Dia said Akhtar's win is a proud moment for rhe country.

"Javed Akhtar Saab has won the prestigious Richard Dawkins Award 2020 for critical thinking, holding religious dogma upto scrutiny, advancing human progress and humanist values. He is the only Indian to have won this award! @Javedakhtarjadu Congratulations! You make us proud," Dia wrote.

Los Angeles, Jan 9: Actors Salma Hayek and Tiffany Haddish are hopeful about the future for women in Hollywood and now cinema is making films about women because the audience was "neglected".

The duo along with Rose Byrne star in Like a Boss, a comedy directed by Miguel Arteta, which follows best friends Mia and Mel (Haddish and Byrne) who join forces to run their own boutique cosmetics company.

When the prospect of a big buyout offer from a notorious titan of the beauty industry (Hayek) tempts them, their lifelong bond - and their business - is put in jeopardy.

Hayek said she is happy with the increase in female-driven films in Hollywood.

"We're on the right path. And we're not going to stop," the actor told Variety.

"What I can tell you is that a lot more women are directing and acting and writing and producing. And there are a lot more movies made about women and for women because the audience was neglected, she said.

She was speaking at the premiere of the film in New York.

Haddish added that the mantle for change shouldn't be left to the traditional decision-makers.

To get things, one has to sometimes make noise, the actor-author said.

"It's about us putting in the work and creating the projects and creating the opportunities in order to do those things to make it better. I sit back and I listen to people talk sometimes, saying, 'They're not letting us; they're not giving it to us.' Why do we have to ask permission? Why can't we just start putting it together? If they want to come on board with it, come on board. And if not, oh well," Haddish said.

"I'm about creating an opportunity. People say I'm loud and obnoxious, but sometimes it’s the squeaky wheel that gets the oil and gets things done," she added.

The comedy comes on the heels of a year gone by in cinema that featured female protagonists in films like Little Women and Captain Marvel.

Mumbai, Jan 7: Actor Anil Kapoor, who next will be seen onscreen in Malang, revealed that he always tells superstar Aamir Khan not to stop working with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

Kapoor was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of Malang along with his co-actors Adtiya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Elli AvRam, film's director Mohit Suri and producers Luv Ranjan, Bhushan Kumar, Ankur Garg and Jay Shewakraman on Monday in Mumbai.

Anil Kapoor has worked with many directors and producers in his 40-year acting career.

Talking about camp culture in the Hindi film industry and praising makers of Malang, Kapoor said, "I feel we need producers like Ankur (Garg) and Luv (Ranjan). I have told Mohit (Suri) to continue doing films with them. I always tell Aamir Khan by calling him on the phone to say that you should not leave Raju Hirani (Rajkumar Hirani). Whenever I see films of both of them, I tell Aamir not to leave him."

He continued, "I feel whenever you make a good team then you should hold on to it. Team is very important and there are certain stars that come together to make something interesting and exciting."

Kapoor gave an example of Hollywood actors and filmmakers while backing his viewpoint.

"If you see Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio they do so many films together. They can work with others, too, but they keep working with each other. There is some magic, obviously. You have to go with the casting but somewhere I feel teams should stand by each other," the actor added.

Malang stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu in lead roles. It is scheduled to release on February 7.
