Belagavi, Aug 11: In what can be termed as an insensitive approach to human suffering, the chauvinists of Sangh Parivar have infiltrated relief centres established by the district administration in flood hit regions of Belagavi in Karnataka in the absence of a full-fledged state government.

Many flood saviours taking shelters in relief camps have reportedly complained against members of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) and its women for imposing ‘Ram Bhajan’ on the inmates.

According to media reports, the Sangh Parivar workers including women who have taken over all the relief camps are allegedly taking advantage of the helpless situation of the flood victims.

Irrespective of the communities, the rains have affected the people of Sankeshwar town where the Hiranyakeshi river is in spate.

Shelters have been set up at Shankarling Karyalaya and Ram Talkies in the town. Hundreds of people have found temporary shelter at these centres as their houses have either been inundated or have collapsed following the rain fury.

The Department of Public Instruction in its latest order has asked officials not to mention caste of the inmates to ensure that secular credentials of the state government are maintained.

However, this commitment is not visible at relief centres. There are many inmates belonging to the Muslim faith at Shankarling Karyalaya who are feeling isolated.

As many as 38 villages are under the grip of floods in Hukkeri taluk. Members of Rashtriya Sevik Sangh were found active in the Sai Bhavan relief camp in Belagavi city where Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had visited recently. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman too visited the centre on Saturday. She is also scheduled to visit the centre in Sankeshwar town.

“The issue has come to my notice. Will bring it to notice of higher up and take action accordingly,” said Reshma Talikoti, Tahasildar of Hukkeri said adding that taking advantage of the situation was unjust.

Bengaluru, Jan 2: The Congress leadership in Delhi is expected to start the process of selecting a new party chief for Karnataka next week. There are strong indications the race has narrowed to DK Shivakumar and MB Patil.

Party insiders said the leadership almost finalised Shivakumar’s name as the president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), but the decision was put on hold after requests by some senior members.

“It’s not that we are against Shivakumar. We think the party should have a Lingayat at the helm since community strongman and chief minister BS Yediyurappa is at the fag end of his long political career. There’s an opportunity here for a Congressman to occupy that space,” said a senior Congress politician, who didn’t want to be named.

That’s where the candidacy of Patil, a Lingayat, scores high.

The party, however, doesn’t want to compromise on quality and wants an efficient KPCC president who can unite two rival factions within the party, one led by Siddaramaiah and another by former union minister KH Muniyappa.

The need to pick a new state president arose after Dinesh Gundurao resigned from the post last month, taking moral responsibility for Congress’s poor showing in the byelections. Siddaramaiah also stood down as Congress party legislature leader.

The insiders said the new KPCC chief could be announced after January 16. The party might also appoint two working presidents and a new legislature party leader, who will automatically become the opposition’s voice in the assembly.

For the latter position, the name of senior Dalit politician and former deputy chief minister G Parameshwara is doing the rounds. But the party, the sources said, could still ask Siddaramaiah to reconsider his decision and stay on.

Many Congress members had raised questions over his stewardship after the bypoll disappointment. They said on his watch, the party had also fared badly in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections, demanding that he be held accountable.

Siddaramaiah is expected to visit Delhi next week to discuss the leadership issue with party boss Sonia Gandhi. Some other senior Congress members, including BK Hariprasad, are also likely to meet her.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: The Hindu Mahasabha has decided to carry out a 'cleaning ceremony' by using 'gau-mutra' (cow urine) to purify Freedom Park, where pro-Pakistan slogans were shouted as a protest against the CAA, NRC and NRP.

On Thursday, an 18-year-old girl Amulya Leona hadraised slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad,' after the organisers of the event under the banner of 'Save Constitution' invited her to address the gathering. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi soon rushed and tried to snatch away mic from her hand.

Amulya, who was arrested by the police soon after the event on charges of Sedition, was remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

Associates of Amulya insisted that she was trying to make a point that nobody in the anti-CAA rallies would hail a ‘long Live Pakistan’ slogan while they would do so for a ‘Long Live Hindustan’ chant.

“She is not dumb. She knew exactly what she was saying. She had a clear narrative in mind, but was interrupted before she could complete it. Her half-comments are now being taken out of context,” said Sujnan, another student-activist.

“In the end, the campaign is not involved with whatever she said or intended to say. It falls on her to explain herself,” said a protest organiser.

Mangaluru, Apr 16: An old refrigerator has been turned into a "disinfection chamber" by researchers who are striving to come up with solutions to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

Dr Arun M Isloor, head of Chemistry Department, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, along with research scholar Syed Ibrahim has come up with the device which can disinfect items kept inside it.

"We have named this as ZERO-COV," Dr Isloor said.

He says the device ensures 99.9 per cent destruction of microorganisms present on the surface of items.

"We can keep items like vegetables, currency notes, books or envelopes inside the chamber. Switching on the chamber for 15 minutes ensures 99.9 per cent destruction of microorganisms present in the surface of the items," Dr Isloor added.
