Satisfied with India's performance in World Championships: Gopichand

August 23, 2015

Mumbai, Aug 23: National badminton coach P Gopichand on Saturday expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Indian players in the just-concluded World Championships in Jakarta.

gopichand"This is the first time so many Indian players had qualified for the World Championships. All the players put up a good show. I am happy with the overall performance," said Gopichand at a function.

The former All England men's singles champion was honoured by cyber gaming hub "Smaaash" Sports Foundation for his contribution to Indian badminton through a joint initiative called "Celebrate Sports" with "Bawraas" and given a cheque of Rs 5 lakh for his badminton academy in Hyderabad.

Only Saina Nehwal could end up on the podium, winning the silver in the women's singles, but Gopichand saw quite a few positives from the overall performance of the Indians.

While praising Saina's silver medal winning effort, Gopichand was also happy with the way P V Sindhu (lost in the quarterfinals of women's singles) and K Srikanth (lost in the third round of men's singles) performed in the tournament after battling their way through injuries.

"There were some injury issues. Both are very young and will learn from these experiences," said Gopichand.

World No. 14 Sindhu, who won back-to-back bronze medals in the previous two World Championships, shocked Olympic champion and former World No. 1 Liu Xuerei from China in round two before losing to eighth seed Sung Ji Hyun of Chinese Taipei.

Third seed Srikath, who won the men's singles title at the Yonex Sunrise Indian Open in March, lost to Hu Yun of Hong Kong, seeded 13th, in round three.

Two other Indians also figured in singles events -- H S Prannoy and seasoned professional and London Olympics quarter finalist P Kashyap, but both made early exits.

Prannoy, seeded 11, lost to 7th seed Viktor Axelson of Denmark in three games in round three, 10th seed Kashyap lost to Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh in round two.

Seasoned women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa also featured in the main draw but could not repeat their bronze medal winning effort of 2011 and lost in the quarterfinals to Japan's Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yanao.

Asked about next year's Rio Olympic Games, Gopichand said it was some way off and there were quite a few tournaments to concentrate on in the run-up to the mega event.

Chennai, Jan 26: Former India cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said that it will be a big loss for the Indian side when MS Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.

"I think he has served the country so well and nobody has done it like him. Everyone has to retire sooner or later. He is not playing matches currently. So I don't know when he will come out one day and say -- I have had enough. I think it will be our loss because he is such a fabulous cricketer," Dev told reporters here.

In the recently released BCCI contracts list, Dhoni did not find a place for himself. The former World Cup winning captain Dev said that it is unfortunate that Dhoni was not included in the contract list.

"I feel sorry that they have not included him.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar had to witness the same. It's not my job and I am not there to give the contract to anyone. It is the job of the cricket board. So, I don't know. You can ask this question to the cricket board. They will be able to answer this question," Dev said.

The 38-year-old Dhoni is currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Especially in the games against England and New Zealand (semi-final), he had to bear the brunt of netizens, who deemed him as the reason for the Men in Blue's loss.

BCCI released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Mumbai, Jan 13: India captain Virat Kohli indicated at dropping himself down the batting order to accommodate both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the playing XI against Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series starting Tuesday.

With vice-captain Rohit Sharma an automatic pick, the team management is left with tough choice of selecting either Dhawan or Rahul in the XI. But the skipper sees no reason why both can't play together.

"Look, a guy in form is always good for the team. ...You obviously want to have the best players available and then chose from what the combination should be for the team. There might be a possibility that all three (Rohit, Shikhar and Rahul) might play. It will be interesting to see what balance we want to take in on the field," Kohli said on the eve of the match.

Asked if he would he be happy to bat lower down the order, Virat said,"Yeah, big possibility. I would be very happy to do so. Look I am not possessive about where I play. I am not insecure about where I bat," said the skipper.

For Kohli, it is more important as to what kind of leadership legacy he leaves behind rather than chase personal glory.

"Being the captain of the team, it is my job to make sure that the next lot is also ready. A lot of the other people might not look at it that way, but your job as a captain is not only to look after the team right now, but also to prepare a team that you leave behind when you eventually pass it onto someone else," he added.
