Saudi Arabia eases financial burden on citizens in royal decrees

Jeddah, Jan 6: Saudi Arabia's King Salman made a series of royal decrees early Saturday easing the financial burden on the country’s citizens.

Saudi state workers and military personnel will see a rise of SR1,000 ($267) in salaries for the next 12 months, effective Jan. 1, 2018, while soldiers in combat on the Kingdom’s southern border will get a one time bonus of SR5,000.

To help with living expenses, welfare recipients and pensioners will get an extra SR500 monthly stipend for the rest of the year.

Government salaries will now be paid on the 27th of each month with all service bills to be issued a week later.

Students are also helped in the king’s decrees with a hike of 10 percent in allowances for the next 12 months.

The state will bear the impact of newly introduced VAT by absorbing it for citizens using private healthcare and education.

There is also good news for first-time home buyers with the state paying the VAT — not exceeding SR850,000 — on the purchase.

Muscat, Jan 11: Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said has died, Aljazeera reported citing state television on Friday.

Qaboos was 79-year-old and was ill for a long time. He has served as the ruler of Oman since 1970 when he ousted his father in a bloodless coup.

Qaboos had no children and has not publicly named his successor.

Sultan Qaboos travelled to Belgium for a week in December for what was described then as "medical checks." He returned to Oman but speculations of his deteriorating health were rife.

Dubai, Apr 10: Saudi Arabia reported 364 new coronavirus cases and three new virus-related deaths, the Ministry of Health announced on Friday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Kingdom is 3,651, out of which 2,919 are currently active, the ministry added.

Out of the new cases, 90 were recorded in Mecca, 78 in Medina, 69 in Riyadh, and 54 in Jeddah, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of fatalities rose to 47, while th number of recoveries reached 685.

The daily number of confirmed cases in Saudi Arabia has not peaked yet, and has been rapidly accelerating.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Health had said earlier this week that four different studies showed that the number of coronavirus cases in the Kingdom could reach between 10,000 to 200,000 within weeks.

The ministry spokesman emphasized the urgent need for citizens and residents to remain at home and maintain social distancing practices to ensure that the virus does not spread further.

Dubai, Apr 11: Saudi Arabia has reported another 382 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4,033, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday.

The ministry also confirmed five more deaths from the virus, pushing the death toll in Kingdom to 52.

A total of 35 people has made full recovery from the deadly disease, taking the tally of patients recovered to 720.
