Saudi Arabia wants world to stand up to Israeli aggression

Riyadh, Mar 12: The Council of Ministers yesterday condemned Israeli attempts to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque and its aggressive practices against worshippers, students and the Holy Qur’an, calling on the international community to take a firm stand against such provocative acts.

“Such aggressive actions represent a violation of the international conventions and treaties as well as a violation of the sanctity of holy places and provocation of the feelings of Muslims across the world,” said Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja following the weekly Cabinet meeting in Riyadh.

The meeting, which was chaired by Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, welcomed the statement issued by the ministerial meeting of the Friends of Yemen in London reiterating support for the unity, sovereignty and independence of Yemen and the commitment to support plans for political transition. The statement took into consideration the principle of noninterference in Yemen's internal affairs. The Cabinet reiterated the Kingdom's keenness to stand by the Yemeni people.

The Cabinet commended Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for approving the greatest expansion plan for the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. It also noted the outcome of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council meeting in Doha, which was co-chaired by Crown Prince Salman and Qatari Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The Cabinet was briefed on the recommendations of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers in its 139th session in Cairo, stressing the need for the development of the Arab League based on its Charter approved at the 16th Arab Summit in Tunisia.

The Cabinet discussed a number of scientific and cultural activities, lauding the opening of the Riyadh International Book Fair, which reflects the Kingdom's keenness and support for culture, sciences, literature and intellectuals.

The Cabinet approved a draft public transport system for Jeddah and endorsed a number of decisions boosting Makkah's public transport system.

The Cabinet authorized the minister of finance to sign an International Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. It also decided to join Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC). Saudi Standards and Quality Organization and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority will be the Kingdom's representatives in SMIIC’s general assembly.

The Cabinet appointed Qassim Al-Mimani of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Sharif Abdulwahab of Technical and Vocational Training Corporation on the board of directors of Saudi Credit and Saving Bank. It appointed Brig. Saeed bin Mohammed Al-Asmari member of the Health Services Council to represent health services at the Ministry of Defense.

The Cabinet approved an agreement with Romania for promoting bilateral political consultations.

It appointed Mohammed Ridha bin Hussain Abu Al-Hamail ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saleh bin Saad Al-Mohanna undersecretary for financial and accounts at the Ministry of Finance, Abdul Aziz bin Saleh Al-Aqeel information adviser at the Ministry of Culture and Information and Badriah bint Saleh Al-Aradi civil affairs adviser at the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Riyadh, May 13: Saudi Arabia’s cabinet on Tuesday urged oil-producing nations not only to adhere to agreed cuts to production, but further reduce output to help restore balance in global oil markets, state news agency SPA reported.

In issuing the call to OPEC+, which includes members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia and other nations, ministers said the Kingdom is committed to supporting the stability of global oil markets.

After the meeting, acting Minister of Media Majed Al-Qasabi said that in addition to its commitment to the OPEC+ agreement, the Kingdom will voluntarily reduce output by an additional 1 million barrels a day in June. It will also try to implement additional cuts this month, with the consent of its customers, he added.

The cabinet said the Saudi initiatives aim to encourage other countries, whether they have signed up to the OPEC+ agreement or not, to adhere to its reduced rates and to cut output even further to help stabilize global oil markets.

During the cabinet meeting, which was conducted using video conferencing, King Salman also briefed ministers on his recent telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. He said they affirmed the historical and strategic relationship between the two countries and their commitment to the continuation of joint efforts to enhance security and stability in the region.

Ministers were then updated on the latest developments in the corona virus crisis, including the steps being taken locally and internationally to control it and safeguard public health, the number of cases in the Kingdom and the care being provided to those who are infected. They also reviewed details of the active screening and testing programs in all parts of the country, which have helped to keep the number of deaths relatively low compared to global rates.

The cabinet praised the efforts being made by government officials to combat the pandemic, and stressed that citizens and expatriates must abide by the precautionary and preventive measures introduced to prevent the spread of the virus.

Ministers described the decision by Saudi Arabia to host the Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen 2020 on June 2 as an extension of the Kingdom’s humanitarian and development contribution, which reflects its pioneering role in supporting its neighbor.

The cabinet also welcomed the formation of the new government in Iraq and reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for the nation and its readiness to work with the new administration to strengthen relations and enhance security and stability in the region.

Beirut, Aug 4: A massive explosion has shaken the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a very high number of casualties expected.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan as saying that the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire had been killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.

The explosion comes at a time when the Arab country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades, and amid rising tensions with Israel.

Dubai, Apr 10: Saudi Arabia reported 364 new coronavirus cases and three new virus-related deaths, the Ministry of Health announced on Friday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Kingdom is 3,651, out of which 2,919 are currently active, the ministry added.

Out of the new cases, 90 were recorded in Mecca, 78 in Medina, 69 in Riyadh, and 54 in Jeddah, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of fatalities rose to 47, while th number of recoveries reached 685.

The daily number of confirmed cases in Saudi Arabia has not peaked yet, and has been rapidly accelerating.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Health had said earlier this week that four different studies showed that the number of coronavirus cases in the Kingdom could reach between 10,000 to 200,000 within weeks.

The ministry spokesman emphasized the urgent need for citizens and residents to remain at home and maintain social distancing practices to ensure that the virus does not spread further.
