Bengaluru, Dec 1: A Boeing 737 Dreamliner, Saudi Arabian airlines flight made an emergency landing at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here on Sunday morning. Although all the passengers were safe, the airport operations were affected for about 45 minutes.

The flight, on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Medina over the Indian airspace, developed problems and immediately requested permission to make the emergency landing from the KIA Air Traffic Control (ATC). The aircraft landed at 9.08 am, a Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) spokesperson said.

Although BIAL maintained it was a ‘technical issue,’ airport sources said one of the engines of the aircraft had failed. A full-scale emergency at the airport meant a posse of fire-fighting machines, vehicles, ambulances and ‘FollowMe’ vehicles were on the tarmac near the runway minutes before the aircraft touched down.

KIA was reportedly chosen due to the unavailability of remote wide-body bays at the Chennai airport. Immediately on landing, all the estimated 250-280 passengers and crew alighted and were taken to the terminal. They were to be flown to Medina after the arrival of another Saudi Arabian flight from Kuala Lumpur later in the day.

Once the passengers were evacuated, the aircraft was towed from the taxiway to the bay by the ‘FollowMe’ vehicle, followed by a fleet of Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. Sources told DH that the Boeing 737 Dreamliner will be at the airport until further investigations, repair and maintenance work are completed.

The ground staff at the airport was alerted about the emergency landing at about 9 am. All arrivals and departures were halted for about 45 minutes, triggering congestion in the air. Flight schedules were also affected, although BIAL said the disruption was brief. However, sources confirmed that there were cascading effects on other flights.

On November 11, a GoAir flight with 180 passengers on board had veered off the runway onto the unpaved area while undertaking a last-minute go-around at the airport. The Airbus A320 Neo aircraft landed safely in Hyderabad, but the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) placed the pilot and crew under suspension. The aircraft had moved about 200m over the grass at the airport.

Disruptions of other flights due to such emergencies could subside once the second runway becomes operational in the first week of December. BIAL had scheduled to commence flight operations from the new runway on December 5. Trials are currently underway.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: A mobile app and a portal offering technology-driven solutions to manage and mitigate floods in urban areas were launched here on Saturday by Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka.

The mobile app 'Bengaluru Megha Sandesha' was developed to disseminate information on rainfall and flood forecast, location-specific dynamic weather directly to the public. "The in-built features of the app and the information provided for a city is the first of its kind in the country," a press release said. This is a system of providing rainfall, flood forecasts and early warning to the officials of government agencies in the city through SMS to their mobile phones, social media platforms and a dedicated web portal, the release said.

The information provided would help the civic authorities act in advance and manage the floods, it said. The portal 'Varunamitra' is for information on the weather. The information provided is based on real-time data from 100 telemetric rain gauges installed and maintained at various locations across the state, it said. Rainfall forecast is based on the weather research and forecast models developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, the release said.

The information on flood forecast is based on the hydrological model, hydraulic routing and automation of the results. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), took up this project on the urban flood model for Bengaluru city. The project was funded by the Central government's department of science and technology, the release added.

Bengaluru, May 26: The state government today hinted that places of religious worship belonging to Hindus will be allowed to reopen from June 1, keeping social distancing and other norms in place.

In principle, the government has decided to open temples coming under the Muzrai department after Lockdown 4.0 ends on May 31. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

“Movement of people on air and rail has started. We have been receiving repeated pleas from devotees that temples should be opened. When this was discussed with the CM during a review of the Muzrai department, it was decided that temples can start from June 1,” Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary told reporters.

Poojary said all day-to-day activities will be allowed in temples. “But religious fairs and ceremonies will not be permitted,” he said.

Mosques and churches

Asked whether his government will allow opening of mosques and churches too from June 1, he replied that they don't come under his Muzrai dept.

Howvever, government sources said this may apply to mosques, churches and other places of religious worship as well. However, this decision will be subject to whether or not the Centre will allow places of religious worship to be open for the public after Lockdown 4.0, an official said.

All places of religious worship have been closed for the public ever since Karnataka enforced a state-wide lockdown on March 24 to contain COVID-19.
