Udupi, Aug 6: The police have recovered the ashes of the burnt body of businessman Bhaskar Shetty, who had been missing under suspicious circumstances since July 28 after he left his home in Udupi.

bhaskar copyThe victim's wife Rajeshwari and body-builder son Navneeth Shetty, who were taken into custody for interrogation, have reportedly confessed to the brutal murder.

Proprietor of Udupi's Hotel Durga International, 52-year-old Bhaskar Shetty was running a business in Saudi Arabia and often used to visit the kingdom. He had handed over the responsibility of managing hotel in Udupi to his wife Rajeshwari.

It is learnt that a quarrel had erupted between the husband and wife over the financial misappropriation by the latter and she had also slapped him in the hotel a month ago. According to sources, she was trying to become the owner of the hotel and keep her husband completely away.

Two days after the mysterious disappearance of the businessman his mother had lodged a missing complaint on July 30 with Manipal police station. The complainant had suspected that his wife and son might have kidnapped him. Hence police had taken the duo into custody.

It is learnt that on August 5 Navneeth Shetty confessed that he along with his mother murdered his father with the help of Niranjan Bhat, a priest on August 28, when the victim had visited the home.

Police sources said that the murderers took the dead body to Nandalike village in Karkala and burnt it to ashes. Later, the ashes and the materials used for a precautionary homa' were packed in gunny backs and thrown into a stream by the priest. Police have managed to recover some of such gunny bags, sources said.

Apparently, Navneet is a very ardent follower of Crime Patrol programme on TV. If people can raise fingers at Zakir Naik, and ban him and his teachings, and probe into his involvement in terrorism, then in this case, the channel and producers of Crime Patrol should also be charged with the same. I wonder where Arnab Goswami is hiding now!

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.
