Saudis, expats hail Shoura’s 40-hour week suggestion

Riyadh, Feb 5: Saudis and expatriates have welcomed the proposed change to Saudi law that would see a 40-hour week and two days off.

“This would be a highly commendable change in Saudi labor law because it will encourage employees to work better and efficiently, said senior systems engineer at Tawuniya Saleh Bucay.

“Giving them more spare time with their loved ones, more vacation days to relax and sleep would mean a lot. In fact, a well-rested workforce would definitely lead to higher productivity and creativity as a whole,” Bucay said.

On Tuesday, the powerful Shoura Council, reiterated its previous decision in favor of the proposal. The final decision rests with the Council of Ministers.

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise,” said an Indian business development director Amir Qayyum. “I wholeheartedly welcome the decision of the Shoura Council. I also humbly request them to consider working hours over one straight shift, because it will help save energy in a big way.”

Soler Garlan, head of a coalition of 45 Filipino organizations based in the Western region, said the two days off would reduce job stress and make workers more productive and efficient.

“The Shoura has rightly reaffirmed its recommendation for a 40-hour working week. The government sector and some private companies had implemented this a while back. Others in the private sector are yet to follow,” said a senior engineer based in Riyadh, Usodan Dida Agun.

“In short, the Shoura recommendation will undoubtedly boost companies’ productivity and output; while at the same time ensure a win-win situation for both employers and employees.”

The move was also commended by human rights advocate, John Monterona. “We welcome the approval of the two days by the Shoura Council. This would mean a good balance between work and rest for all expat workers. We urge the Shoura Council to also implement a day off for all household service workers.”

Saudi citizen Mohammed Al-Juhani said that the decision was absolutely right and meets the needs of all citizens. Another Saudi, Abdulrahman Al-Saeed, said this would reduce the strain on Saudi workers.

India set to buy fighter jets, missile systems, weapons worth Rs 38,900-cr from Russia

New Delhi, Jul 2: In the midst of India's tense border standoff with China, the defence ministry on Thursday approved procurement of a number of frontline fighter jets, missile systems and other platforms at a cost of Rs 38,900 crore to bolster the combat capability of the armed forces, officials said.

They said 21 MiG-29 fighter jets are being bought from Russia while 12 Su-30 MKI aircraft will be procured from Russia. The ministry has also approved a separate proposal to upgrade existing 59 MiG-29 aircraft.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The procurement of 21 MiG-29 and upgrading of the existing fleet of MiG-29 are estimated to cost the government Rs 7,418 crore while purchase of 12 new Su-30 MKI from the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd will be made at a cost of Rs 10,730 crore, the officials said.

The DAC also approved procurement of long-range land-attack cruise missile systems with a range of 1,000 KM and Astra Missiles for Navy and Air Force.

The officials said cost of these design and development proposals is in the range of Rs 20,400 crore.

"While acquisition of Pinaka missile systems will enable raising additional regiments over and above the ones already inducted, addition of long-range land attack missile systems having a firing range of 1000 KM to the existing arsenal will bolster the attack capabilities of the Navy and the Air Force," said a defence ministry official.

"Similarly induction of Astra Missiles having beyond visual range capability will serve as a force multiplier and immensely add to the strike capability of the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force," he said.

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan tests covid positive

Bhopal, Jul 25: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Saturday he has tested positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Chouhan made the announcement in a series of tweets.

“My dear countrymen, I had symptoms of COVID-19 and after the test, my report has come back positive. I appeal to all my colleagues that whoever came in contact with me, must get their corona test done. And my close contacts should quarantine themselves,” Chouhan said in a tweet in Hindi.

“If COVID19 is treated on time, a person is completely cured. I have been reviewing the status of corona infection every evening since March 25. I will try to review corona situation through video conferencing as much as possible now,” he added.

The chief minister said the review meeting will now be held by home minister Narottam Mishra, urban development and administration minister Bhuppendra Singh, health education minister Vishvas Sarang and health minister Dr Prabhuram Choudhary in his absence.

“I will also continue to do everything possible to help control COVID19 in the state during treatment,” he said.

One of Chouhan’s ministerial colleagues tested positive for Covid-19 late on July 22.

The chief minister along with the minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit president VD Sharma and state unit general secretary (organisation) Suhas Bhagat had visited Lucknow in a government plane on July 21 to attend the funeral of MP governor Lalji Tandon who died away in the Uttar Pradesh capital, his hometown. during hospitalisation.

The minister is admitted to a private medical college’s teaching hospital in Bhopal.

Height of cruelty, insult to humanity: Mayawati on dumping of COVID-19 victims bodies in Karnataka

Lucknow, Jul 2: After a video showing health workers allegedly tossing bodies of coronavirus victims in a large pit in Karnataka, BSP President Mayawati on Wednesday stated that the incident is the "height of cruelty and insult to humanity".
The former UP Chief Minister demanded that the guilty must be punished.

"The tragedy that the bodies of COVID-19 victims being thrown into trenches in Ballari, Karnataka is the height of cruelty and an insult to humanity. Though incidents related to inhuman cruelty with corona patients are rampant but guilty of Ballari must be punished by the state government," Mayawati said in a tweet.

Also, in another tweet, she asked the Central government to extend the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

"In order to check ignominy of starvation on account of long unprecedented hardship & unemployment due to coronavirus and the subsequent nationwide lockdown, the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna must continue not till November but till the end of the pandemic, this is the demand of BSP," she tweeted.
